It's too big and I can't turn it so I need to "bandicoot" the partly broken-down leaf litter and bag it i.e. mine the heap like a gold miner. It got too big because the fire season hit very early and so there's been a mad effort to rake up leaves etc.
There are a lot of small sticks in there that I need to extract. What I do is lop tree branches, cut the side branches from the stem and, if the stem is thick as it usually is, put it out in the green waste, cut the side branches up in small lots and dump the lot in the compost heap and let Mother Nature separate the leaves from the twigs and I bag the leaves or put them in a tub, compress them as much as possible, add some water and in two months I have lovely brown ... something. Soil?
