There is only 12 notes before they repeat, out of those 12 notes you only really use 7 in a song, thats what a scale is, a random combo of 7 of 12 notes, rock songs only use 5 out of 12 notes.

thats a rock scale for guitar, if you just played the top string and used those numbers on the fretboard ( 0 means just play the open string ) and just made some repeating pattern it would sound like a common rock song.

if you add the 6th fret it becomes a blue scale, 6 note scales are rare however, i think its mainly just blues.
