I once tried to find one, but gave up after realizing that there are none that actually filter the two biggest problems: microplastics and hormones.

Don't forget about rainwater capture. In one rain storm using literally a shower curtain purchase from the dollar store in a 2 ft by 2 ft square I captured nearly a gallon of water. The water with some of the best tasting I've ever tasted. Tasted like melted snow. Now some people say there's pollution in the air and you're going to get precipitates but do remember that rain water is distilled water. If there's that much pollution in the air then when you distill the water in your own home you're still going to get the same pollution. As for using a plastic sheet or anything else yes I'm sure there's some bad stuff in the plastic and I'd make sure it's been rinsed off really well the first few times and you want to let the rain wash it the first little bit before you let it go but if you happen to get a little bit of sediment or dust in your water it's certainly not going to be any worse than drinking well water. It doesn't take a lot to spread out a tarp and have it angled to go into a container.

Make sure if you do something like a roof capture though that you're not capturing off a asphalt shingle roof because the carcinogens in that won't wait 20 years to give you cancer. Personally I'm a big believer in ceramic tile roofs and metal roofs.

It's a shitty situation when one needs a water filter....I've always drank spring water, even as kids we didn't have a running water supply but my father hauled 100 gallons a week from the artesian well 2 miles from the house and then in 68, after almost 2 years of pounding a 1,500 lb, 4" diam steel point down 175 ft he finally hit the aquifer...and the guy who did it was 85 years old and blind and was from Georgia. Looking back at that now I'm impressed...it's a testament to the tenacious spirit of the White S.A.N.E race. And his wife was loyal to his side until the day he died. The past has a way of humbling people who forget what it took to survive.
Anyways....sorry about you having to need a water filter.

I have a reverse osmosis system but its a lot of filters to change multiple times a year but it removes a lot of the fluoride and everything. Distilling should remove all the crap from it. The reverse osmosis system is passive filtering, distilling will require power. If you go distiller I would get one with a remineralizer.

Berkey if you're talking water filters. Reverse osmosis isn't super expensive though, and it's easy to install.
