Text on pic: "Generations come and go, like flowers they wither, like suns they collapse, like wind they are blown apart. But the Folk remains eternally!”
c. 1920, Marta Elisabet Fossel, Austrian.

...
Quite interesting history in this picture. Painter was born in the middle of Austria, but moved to its border to Graz, and made this pic of Slovenian family in time of Carinthian plebiscite, probably to encourage them to vote for staying in new Austria state, then already with close ties to Wiemar Germany. She was wrong about "eternally" too, but nice pic.

How does that first word mean "Generationen". I am reading "Geschlechter," meaning "gender". Genders come, Genders go. Makes no sense to me.

Geschlechter means family, dynasty, house... like wider family with ancestors

yeah you're right, that translation I got on telegram, so it's a bit loose with this word, but I think the rest is good.

Hmm, yes you seem to be right. It is a bit outdated use of the word, but for the time period of that drawing it would fit.
Your translation is a bit loose, but gets the message across.

To me is more interesting the choice they had, either to choose cultural or national.
At that time national looked for many as a huge step backwards, since was not many ties or similarities with south Slavic nations, but national proved to be a correct choice. This part of Austria now is enriched with all sorts of shit, and on sunny side of Alps is literally a paradise.
