Requiem for a Dream (2000) is great anti-drugs movie. It shows how much drugs are dangerous and how much they ruin the life of junkies. Recommended to watch for young adults unaware cabout the danger.
I used to be a horror movie fan. Not really anymore. When I saw this film , somewhere around 2000 - 01 , I thought it should be categorized as a horror film. This is truly a horror film.
I think I disagree, but I see why you'd say that. There is an aspect of the spiral downward (esp. in the case of the mother) that approaches Fear and Loathing-type chaos at the film's climax. It's not a movie for young people, at all. At the same time, it's not horror in the traditional sense; at least there is nothing supernatural. It's existential horror, and the kind that happens when human desire and yearning don't find the right outlets. The way that the nature of drug use aligns psychologically with the "hit" of wishful thinking and a perverted American Dream.
I wouldn't call it horror, but this film fucking drains you. Don't expect anything but heaviness and dread for the rest of your day after you watch it. I don't think there are many films that capture tragedy this well, in the Greek sense.

I met Jared Leto around 2002 and told him that RFAD was the most intense movie I had ever seen and he told me it was really difficult filming it because of all the situations they had to endure - he didn't go into specifics, but also said doing Fight Club was a headache too because of all the other extras in the Project Mayhem part of the movie were hard to cast because guys had issues shaving their heads, so they had to raise the base salary for the extras to keep them from walking away & having to reshoot all those scenes.

Also contrast the pharmaceutical industry preying on retirees by addicting them to stimulants.
