My dad was born in 1917 on a homestead on the plains of eastern Colorado. Into his mid-90s he would still ask 'is this drinking water?'.

Common sense on display. That's why he lived to his 90's

"Ale" did the same thing via the alcohol produced during fermentation.

It shouldn't have been that big of a jump in decreased mortality, due to the fact most Ales were watered down and commonly consumed during most meals.

I tried explaining this to someone here who thought all the colonists were constantly shit faced and that we should all become alcoholics for the revolution. They would do the same with ciders during that time as well

I think those kind of people are just lost causes. Of course they weren't shitfaced 24/7, of course they didn't just drink beer/ale when the water went bad. There was like, one or two places where they did that. They drank watered-down ale while the mayor/lord went upriver to find what was making the water bad and drag it out of the river. Took maybe 2-3 days.

Yeah and when they did drink ale/cider with meals regularly it was somewhere in between "near beer" concentration and regular beer. What they were drinking was perhaps 1/4 potency of a regular beer. And they would have only one pint of it. So maybe a slight buzz if that but definitely not drinking to get drunk.

the discovery of tobacco in the new world 500 years ago is what led to the dramatic increase in scientifical progress in Europe and America. The ban of smoking cigarettes made the USA stupider. Europe/Asia still smoke and are smarter. Every 20th century scientific discovery was found by chain smoking caffeine fiends.

There's a good book the title is something like.

The history of the world in 6 drinks.

Worth a read. The drinks are

Tea
Beer
Hard liquor
Coffee
Soda? Maybe that's got to be a bad one

Can't remember the other

Modern beer is the worst. Full of phytoestrogens, empty calories and makes you look like a faggot.

Correct. Proper Ales were almost a meal in a pint glass.

Doppelbock, Triplebock, Porters, and Stouts were popular before Modern Pissner beers were mass marketed as "Beer."

Imagine the ales, beers, meads, etc that would be available without jews fucking everything up.
