You can do something similar with multiplying by 9. 9x2: First digit is 2-1=1, second digit is 10-2=8, 9x2=18

9x3: First digit is 3-1=2, second digit is 10-3=7, 9x3=27, and so on.

I hadn't realized this about square roots though, that's pretty cool.

That's the way Euro-people write the number 1. The tip-off is the way they wrote the number 7 above, with a line through it.
