One such draconian regulation states that household appliances such as fridges, washing machines, and heat pumps must be fitted with smart functions that can be controlled by “any persons carrying out load control,” namely the National Grid, which oversees the majority of electricity transmission and distribution in Britain.
Jail and fines for not turning over control of your appliances to the government? Sounds a bit excessive, even for Brits. Aussies are next.
"Sorry your food went bad, but we needed to turn off your fridge and air conditioner because of the heat wave."

Take special note of 2d. From my reading, this means they even want control over any battery backups you might have. So if they cut off your refrigerator, they don't even want you running it on a backup, because fuck you.

I was caught using a battery backup to keep my food from spoiling.
