The Indian toilets remind them of their usual street habits, and they keep Western toilets also because Americans bring lots of money when they visit.

Why is it requested to not use the washroom when the train stops at any station? In Indian Railways, most of the coaches have still not been fitted with bio toilets or any system that could process/manage/store waste. The pile of excreta goes directly onto the tracks.

They periodically allocate large amounts of money to 'eliminate' this problem, but it's a repeating cycle.

in France in public areas you will find those 'indian' toilets too. But I've never seen a street shitter there I have to say.

I was just going to post the same thing. In France they do have these squat toilets around in some places. I think it's always been part of their culture, even before "the invasion". One time I was in a very old building in Paris - probably 18th century at least - and it was fitted with these crude squatters. On a side note, it was the French who developed the Bidet, if I'm not mistaken.

When I went to Turin, Italy they had these toilets everywhere, even in corporate office. The upper floors had western style toilets while the floors near the warehouse workers had these.
