Help- My employer wants to mandate using the TimeCo app……

submitted by Steelerfish to AskUpgoat 8 monthsSep 7, 2023 21:28:15 ago (+15/-0)     (AskUpgoat)

We are a small manufacturer. Less than 20 employees. They won’t be using any of the biometric stuff, but do expect us to download the app on our phones. Hasn’t been implemented yet.
No way in hell am I - or most people there- going to download a tracking app.
Im not a techfag- definitely the tradesmen I work with do not have any tech savvy.
TimeCo is the app.

I’ve already posted their questionable privacy notice to fellow employees for their info. - which stipulates our data is their data- in summary - at least as far as my basic knowledge understands…..
They track online data, location data, hardware data, etc…

Any thoughts and suggestions from techfags regarding obvious security/privacy/legal/etc issues I can highlight during group zoom discussions that will happen on Monday regarding implementation?

I do understand the company’s need for cost analysis, tracking labor, etc….
Need a happy medium…..

Edit one—

Option suggested- have the company use a house computer for everyone to log information into in lieu of individual app logs…
- - that would solve privacy issues- I don’t think that’s an option.
As I get more info I’ll update

Worst case scenario: You could buy a used phone and get the most minimal of service for it then leave it at work in your tool box. My ATT is $30/month.

Mint is $15 a month.

Kinda interested in this. Do you use it?

[ - ] Kozel 0 points 8 monthsSep 9, 2023 00:59:46 ago (+0/-0)

I use it on a device which I don't use.

[ - ] x0x7 0 points 8 monthsSep 11, 2023 08:21:10 ago (+0/-0)

But you could have unlimited talk and text and 5 gigs of data. But true, if you have a device you don't use much that's good to know about.

[ - ] Clubberlang 2 points 8 monthsSep 7, 2023 22:03:04 ago (+2/-0)

How much data do you get for 30 a month?

[ - ] Lophan 1 point 8 monthsSep 7, 2023 22:42:32 ago (+1/-0)

Verizon prepaid is also an option
5GB $25 month after a few months

[ - ] Clubberlang 3 points 8 monthsSep 7, 2023 23:44:13 ago (+3/-0)

5gb for 25 fuck off.

Are there mobile data options with at least 100gb that won't leave my ass looking like gaypatriots mouth when a jew walks by?

[ - ] Outlaw_Aryan 1 point 8 monthsSep 8, 2023 01:05:34 ago (+1/-0)

Ahh, well that's two separate issues. As to your ass and pillow biter patriots mouth...probably not. But only you can answer that grass hopper!

If you're looking for affordable data plans as part of a phone carrier, no. Yes if you're talking about mobile internet without phone.

[ - ] Clubberlang 0 points 8 monthsSep 8, 2023 21:47:32 ago (+0/-0)

mobile internet without phone.

Who offers that? I'm guessing Verizon at exorbitant fees.

[ - ] MuricaPersonified 0 points 8 monthsSep 9, 2023 04:03:58 ago (+0/-0)

Nope; fuck the major providers. I use Calyx Institute, but new customers are having issues having their routers sent and/or activated, and it piggybacks off of Spring/T-mobile's network. No datacaps, but T-Mobile has gotten greedy and found a way to throttle after 50 gigs. I mean, they tried before but there used to be ways around it.

It's $500/yr but the first year is a bit more because it includes price of the router. There are a couple active competitors that supposedly have no throttling issues, but they're super expensive.

[ - ] Clubberlang 0 points 8 monthsSep 10, 2023 00:39:00 ago (+0/-0)

And that's a mobile option that you can take on the road or stationary at home router?

I have a optus 4g mobile data pocket router I got when I was trapped in Australia wonder if that'll work here.

I was paying about 60/mo for 500gb of 4g. I'm guessing there's no such option here I've been looking.

They seem hell bent on 4 lines for 25 bullshit.

Mobile modem/router. My particular model is the M2000, with a T-Mobile sim that is tied to Calyx's account.

Calyx is a non-profit security research and internet provider that utilizes mobile modem/routers to connect associates to Sprint/T-Mobile as their primary service (but they do other good privacy-related work that no one cares about).

Back in the day Clearwire was a promising upstart cellular network infrastructure builder and provider in North America, and they had a clause that allowed non-profits to piggypank off their networks and have their users utilize them as they saw fit (enter Calyx and their sales to abuse this loophole while also funding their existing lawsuits and research). Sprint bought Clear out, but the clause for unfittered, unfiltered non-profit use remained. Years passed, and T-Mobile acquired Sprint in yet another modern day anti-trust violation. The clause still remained, and they hated that.

5g comes around and T-Mobile decides the clause doesn't apply to it, and they will throttle past 50GB, 5g was originally fast, but quickly became saturated with normies, so its a moot point and everyone switched back to 4g in router settings for unthrottled. They started video throttling, we switched DNS. They figured that out, we used VPNs. It got really bad for the last few months but apparently things are sort of fine again at an average of 7MBps down (vs the old 30+), but hey, whatever. T-Mobile wants to kill that clause, but they can't because it's ingrained in almost two decades of old terms of use that they acquired but cannot change; it requires a full network overhaul to null them out. Still, it's been a fight.

I know there are better options now, but neither know much about them nor much about their pricing schemes other than they're not much better price-wise than major carriers aside from being unlimited.

Calyx and the contempary alternatives for the most part do not work outside of the Americas. Pretty sure there are some European options but am not familiar. If you want Australia, then I guess the Starlink beta program is your best bet (if you can even enroll), and so far it both sucks for mobility and is expensive. There may be similar options abroad that abuse terms of the infrastructure's owners, but I am not versed in them.

All in all, aside from simply looking for relatively decent connectivity on the go, you'll find untold stories of kikery behind the scenes everywhere you look.

Edited this several times because drunk and trying to tidy it up.

👍

The part your drunk ass glossed over was the router is from Aus but I escaped the tyranny ridden shitskin infested penal colony and I'm now stateside working remotely and looking for a mobile data solution for work. So if they place I'm at decides it want to suck more jew dick I'm Audi5000.

[ - ] StealthNinjaTaliban 1 point 8 monthsSep 8, 2023 10:37:36 ago (+1/-0)

I get 1 GB that rolls over. I use the wifi at home so its always rolling over.

[ - ] Clubberlang 0 points 8 monthsSep 8, 2023 21:49:05 ago (+0/-0)

I'm hardly ever at "home" so I need a mobile data 4g 5g option that won't rape me like AOC during the patriots visit to the peoples house.

[ - ] Boyakasha 2 points 8 monthsSep 8, 2023 04:55:35 ago (+2/-0)

Fuck having a data plan. Use the work WiFi for free and leave the phone there. Tether off the main phone with WiFi hotspot if you have to go somewhere with it.

[ - ] MoronSaint 1 point 8 monthsSep 7, 2023 23:04:43 ago (+1/-0)

Mint Mobile is $15/mo

[ - ] OoklaTheMok 5 points 8 monthsSep 7, 2023 21:34:50 ago (+5/-0)

Buy a burner from anywhere and tell them you broke your old one. Then just use that one for work.

[ - ] Steelerfish [op] 10 points 8 monthsSep 7, 2023 21:40:09 ago (+10/-0)

That is my line of thinking. I’ll gladly get a prepaid phone (expensed to them) for work related issues….
I draw the line on installing that on my personal property .

I’m sure they’d love to see what I post here!

[ - ] OoklaTheMok 10 points 8 monthsSep 7, 2023 21:44:31 ago (+10/-0)

Right!! No fucking way your installing shit on my personal phone. lol

[ - ] KosherHiveKicker 5 points 8 monthsSep 7, 2023 22:10:08 ago (+5/-0)

Exactly.

Force them to pay for a company phone, phone service plan, and then make a plan to leave it at the job site in a secure location to charge.

Let them track-data mine that phone all the want, on their dime.

They should buy the phone.

[ - ] FacelessOne 3 points 8 monthsSep 8, 2023 06:52:34 ago (+3/-0)

Came to say this. They want you to use an app, it's their responsibility to provide the equipment to run it on. Don't be a retard and concede on this employer responsibility.

[ - ] Kozel 4 points 8 monthsSep 7, 2023 23:19:12 ago (+4/-0)

In some states there is legal precedent for companies being required to provide you with a device or with compensation for using your device.

If that's not then just get a cheap used phone off of ebay for $40 and buy this $10 lifetime plan https://www.walmart.com/ip/seort/680827893

It only has 100mb data so connect the phone to wifi and disable mobile data

WARNING - California Proposition 65 none

Bonus, this phone plan will not cause cancer in California. Unfortunately, it's out of stock.

might be in stock at target or something, look on r/freedompop

(You should verify what I am saying here.)

The company cannot use your personal resources. Tell them they need to buy everyone a work phone to install the app on, as well as pay for the monthly phone connection plan. That's the end of their grand idea.

[ - ] rapid_water 0 points 8 monthsSep 9, 2023 21:09:15 ago (+0/-0)

Getting a second phone and installing the app is your best option. Some of the phones are better with security than others (oneplus is better with security, can research others too) where you can limit what the app is allowed to access (such as contacts, location, phone, etc...)

Depending on your budget, it's best to get a 2nd phone that allows you to set permissions for individual apps.

[ - ] Anus_Expander 2 points 8 monthsSep 7, 2023 22:19:31 ago (+2/-0)

Quit, start your own business, and steal their customers.

Before you go, steal everything you can.

[ - ] SteppingRazor 1 point 8 monthsSep 8, 2023 09:35:26 ago (+1/-0)

Either they provide you a phone or disobey the order.

[ - ] OftenWrong 0 points 8 monthsSep 9, 2023 08:13:09 ago (+0/-0)

tell them you are not downloading any apps on your private property and ask them to provide you a work phone to use.

[ - ] recon_johnny 1 point 8 monthsSep 8, 2023 01:04:18 ago (+1/-0)

IMO, first thing to do is ask: "WHY. Why this particular app? WHAT. What benefit does this app have that something else (or previous solution) did not? HOW. How much do you know about this app and it's ancillary functionality: location tracking (and not just while at work), data storage (WHY are you allowing another company to keep information on your employees...forever), etc. WHO. Who recommended this to you? WHERE. Where do you see this going, as the many examples of tracking/data/privacy for things like FB, Instagram, Google, et al., that can be provided".

Then you can counter, intelligently, to the use. And if it's shown that he's being a tyrannical cunt, then you will expose that, too.

[ - ] Trickthegoyim 1 point 8 monthsSep 7, 2023 23:03:34 ago (+1/-0)

ZOG can access your data regardless. The phones have backdoors already in the operating system....some app won't change anything.

[ - ] Trickthegoyim 1 point 8 monthsSep 7, 2023 23:02:56 ago (+1/-0)

It won't reveal any info excect location data when you open the app. You have to give the app permission to record audio or get access to your photos etc. Also if you dont trust your employer you should quit anyway. Stop tripping over this.

[ - ] x0x7 1 point 8 monthsSep 7, 2023 22:56:48 ago (+1/-0)

I see there is a signin in their website. You may be able to track your time through the website instead of the app.

[ - ] Clubberlang 1 point 8 monthsSep 7, 2023 22:02:18 ago (+1/-0)*

Dear Landwhale LGBTQP loving HR

I don't have a data plan on my phone but if you would like to pay me to get one we can renegotiate my contract.

Otherwise my budget doesn't allow for a data plan and I'm unable to download the app.

Could you please recommend an alternative.

Thanks,

Steelerfish

[ - ] ButtChugging 1 point 8 monthsSep 7, 2023 21:59:44 ago (+1/-0)

Get a phone with Lidar. That way they can collect more data and say they are not collecting it. Standard smart phones only allow them facial recognition, tracking, voice recognition, finger print.

[ - ] PotatoWhisperer2 0 points 8 monthsSep 8, 2023 22:41:32 ago (+0/-0)

Besides using a burner phone you might want to consult with a lawyer.

And start searching for a new job. Don't tell your current employer. Just look for a better job.

[ - ] NorthAmericanPorchMonkey 0 points 8 monthsSep 7, 2023 22:03:52 ago (+1/-1)

Buy a cheapo used android phone with cash and use the company's app on it, but dont put anything else personal on that device.

Next, buy a faraday bag and keep that device in the bag when you leave work. And if you feel the need to put the phone in the bag during work, your excuse can be "I lost signal sometimes" and it would be believable because if the device were to be professionally examined, it would just have a history of losing signal as opposed to force stopping the app or turning the device off.
