I was building something out and half way through one of the features I was running into problems. I ended up rolling my own version which was much more fine tunable, and fit my needs better. Lately I've found the components and software out there has gotten so horrifically bad, rolling my own really is the best option. I even looked at the paid vendors, and their crap looked ugly as all sin and was super limited. And they were charging thousands for this trash ... Dev world isn't what it used to be anymore that's for sure
I blame agile. In most cases, agile is just a buzz word and is implemented in such a way that guarantees crap output. That and most web developers really don't know what they are doing and just talk a good game but output total crap.
I came from the world of OS, and I always had a focus on lean, portable, minimal code. A lot of times, the outputs from these code pieces are ginormous resource hogs with absolute shit threading techniques
