There is a 200 year old, 4 foot tall dry stack wall that winds around my neighborhood, crossing property lines. No one messes with it. When it gets to my property, it’s dismantled and strewn about. It was a mowing hassle. My neighbor is an area historian and informed me that our hood used to be a cotton plantation and that the slave quarters were on mine and his property. These slaves received a wage and they would hide this loot in the dry stack walls around their quarters. He found a cache of silver, not much, in his properties wall using a metal detector.

He told this story to some Boy Scouts in the 1970’s, and the little shits proceeded to dismantle the walls all over the neighborhood looking for treasure. They took my wall apart 35 years before it was mine.

It’s cool that a man can stack rocks with no mortar and unless some asshole fucks with it, it will stand for thousands of years.

We had an acre of land in VT at one time. it was forest, but at one time had been a farm. there was a dry stone wall running through the center of it. IIRC, in VT it is illegal to dismantle these walls, as they are considered historic.
