I prefer lethal injection of ethanol. Might take a liter to do the job, but the heart keeps pumping, circulating the poison. And if it stop, well, job done.
No one can object on grounds on cruelty given the reckless recreational use of alcohol.
The criminal gets to teach a valuable public health message.
Death via massive amounts of Ethanol is a good option as well.
It still requires an IV setup, and medical staff in a close hands-on capacity. The Nitrogen setup just requires him to be restrained and placed inside the room. No medical staff needed.
Breathing pure nitrogen doesn't cause nitrogen narcosis, but lowering air pressure abruptly can, even if you aren't breathing pure nitrogen.
Displacing oxygen from the air, using nitrogen or helium or basically any neutral gas other than carbon dioxide, is arguably the most humane way to kill someone. The question is whether it's moral to execute that person, not whether this is how it should be done.

And do it faster. Spending decades and decades on death row is bizarre. It used to be you were executed shortly after a guilty verdict.

I appreciate designing new and fascinating ways of slaughtering hostiles, but the bullet is cheap and hasn't failed us yet.

Sounds like something that's actually "safe" and effective.
