So much to say about this....I've been diving and swimming 2 oceans and 1 sea for over 30years and have been around barracuda, sharks, killer whale and plenty of ray...number one rule of ray, keep 3 or more lengths away and never take your eyes off that tail and never approach a ray head on, they prefer whipping their barbed tail from rear to front over their head...that barb should have been snipped at the tail right away or as soon as possible...wondering what species of ray it was, in warm waters ie Caribbean, Atlantic Ocean off Barbados or upper South America and around Nicoya peninsula in the Pacific the Spotted Eagle Ray is common, I've seen them as large as 2 of my body lengths from fin tip to fin tip, at least 12-13 ft...5 -9 barbs at the end of their tail, 7 is common, and the tail pumps venom into the barbs...just a point of interest, if a ray swims to you then there's nothing to fear and if you just so happen to have a pouch filled with fish eyeballs the ray will eat out of your hand...just so you know.
