I own $500+ in hammers

submitted by HeyJames to whatever 8 monthsAug 24, 2023 20:03:37 ago (+4/-1)     (whatever)

A good hammer is a game changer. I used to think it didn't matter and just bought cheap ass hammers. That was the wrong way to look at it.

Yes a cheap hammer will work. But will you enjoy using it? Will it fuck up your wrist? Will it be unbalanced and shitty?

Having good hammers is important. From dead blow, to ball peen, to heavy sledge. Anyone who is not a physically worthless sack of dog shit who works at home will know the value of a good hammer.

I just broke the Leather gripped Estwing I've been carrying for 20+ years, so I went out and bought a new one that's exactly the same, but it's junk.

That's a common problem these days. Most things are junk, even if they used to be good.

They're not the same. I bought two thinking the first one was just gay. Turns out Estwing has turned gay.
Neither one was properly tempered so they're both far too hard, and one sings. The bottom gromit is now really thick and sharp for some gay reason, and lastly the first one I tried to get was twisted at the neck so the handle wasn't square to the face.

They both say made in U.S.A. but they're probably made from low quality chinese steel instead of Pittsburgh steel and instead of Americans making them it's probably beaners.

I always keep an ergonomic nigger knocker with me while traveling in my automobile. I’d hate to injure my wrist while stopping a nigger from nigging on me. You get what you pay for.

I have many hammers but my go to is a 14oz Stiletto for framing. For demo and tear out I use a 26oz Estwing.

Good advice. I had the head of a cheap hammer come flying off mid swing. I was lucky it didnt hit me in the head.

I have three go-to hammers for when I work: A tack hammer, a good striking hammer, and a framing hammer. I tend to use the latter most just for the weight and the heft. I just like the feel of a good, heavy hammer. Since I was a child, I've always had a knack for being able to strike nails accurately and on center without bending them. A heavy hammer helps me get the job done quickly and easily.

I tend to buy decent tools when/as I need them. Nothing too cheap, but I don't really need the top-tier stuff. Somehow my garage is stuffed with tools. I'm going to need another standup tool box.

Plumb 22oz long handle ( no waffle head) framing hammer.
Plumb 20oz general carpentry (full steel tang like an Estwing).
Estwing 18oz finish hammer.
Is all I ever needed for carpentry.
Can't have too many hammers though. Buy at flea markets, I have mason hammers for breaking stone too. Mini sledges and 5lb and 9lb sledges too.
"That 9lb hammer , its a little too heavy, for my size, well for my size".

The law of the instrument, otherwise known as Maslow’s hammer is a cognitive bias that involves an over-reliance on a familiar tool. As Abraham Maslow said in 1966, “I suppose it is tempting, if the only tool you have is a hammer, to treat everything as if it were a nail.”

A lot of people have bought $500 hammers. Mostly military contractors.
