You don't have to disable the GPS on hacked/homemade drones. You just have to flash the system with a geofence-free operating system.

It's super easy to buy a consumer or commercial drone and replace the mobo with a kit. Not only do you have the freedom to fly wherever the hell you want, as high as you want, but it can unlock higher performance and features.

Yes it's very similar to rooting your phone and just like phones it depends on the brand/model.
