NVIDIA BIOS Signature Lock Broken, vBIOS Modding and Crossflash Enabled by Groundbreaking New Tools

You can now play with NVIDIA GeForce graphics card BIOS like it's 2013! Over the last decade, NVIDIA had effectively killed video BIOS modding by introducing BIOS signature checks. With GeForce 900-series "Maxwell," the company added an on-die security processor on all its GPUs, codenamed "Falcon," which among other things, prevents the GPU from booting with unauthorized firmware. OMGVflash by Veii; and NVflashk by Kefinator (forum names), are two independently developed new tools that let you flash almost any video BIOS onto almost any NVIDIA GeForce graphics card, bypassing "unbreakable" barriers NVIDIA put in place, such as BIOS signature checks; and vendor/device checks (cross-flashing). vBIOS signature check bypass works up to RTX 20-series "Turing" based GPUs, letting you modify the BIOS the way you want, while cross-flashing (sub-vendor ID check bypass) works even on the latest RTX 4090 "Ada."

Sweet.

are you going to mod your GPU with this? i'm staying away because mine is already overclocked from factory

I'm usually on my laptop. For instance, I'm not at home today, and I may still want to use the GPU, so using a laptop helps me. So no. It sounds like it would disable whatever the manufacturer setup. It's 3 series, so I could only do the cross flash.

I can build a computer. I have a server and a bunch of Raspberry Pis. But I haven't actually constructed a gaming PC in a while.

i hear stories of gpus exploding from doing this way back in the day. a little overclock doesnt hurt but some people may go overboard with this i'm sure

I actually had my last laptop undervolted on the CPU just to save a bit of heat and power. Overclocking the laptop GPU works within its power envelope. It can be hard to increase the power available because more than the VBIOS is involved in that. I have done so though. And reverted it because there was no real point.

One potential application of this is swapping the BIOS with a different laptop that draws more power. But like I said there are other complications such as actually getting that power.

This is a really good reason to avoid buying used Nvidia GPUs.

Why? You can just re-flash the BIOs to whatever you want.

That's my point. Someone could swap the cooler from a broken eg, 3070 to a working 3060, flash the BIOS to a 3070 and you likely wouldn't know until you tried gaming on it. By then the seller is gone and you're stuck with a subpar card for your money. That's just one possibility.

Another possibility is someone flashing the BIOS for extreme overclocking, damaging the card but reflashing the BIOS with tweaked settings that allow it to run but in a reduced capacity.

Ah right. I keep forgetting about normal scams. I guess I get so wrapped up in the big jewish ones that I forget about the day-to-day bullshit that I don't normally deal with.

"unbreakable" barriers

Nothing is unbreakable. If it can be made, it can be broken, hacked, copied, and remade. The main variable in difficulty is time.

Computer security has always been a cat and mouse game: You build a better mousetrap and the mice get smarter.
