Friend is missing, need to figure out how to find him.

Edit*: so fuckin crap, I talked to a mutual friend, basically my buddy has been stealing from everyone he knows and has turned into a massive piece of crap. And they also think he's probably on drugs, so he is literally taking people's money to fix cars, just ghosting everyone, and then locking his gate so no one can get in... I'll write him a letter since he is checking the mail but I guess if he doesn't call me I'll just have to report the car stolen.

Got a weird issue, one of my friends has gone missing. He's a mechanic and works from home. He was working on my car and two other guys cars. I texted him 3 months ago about how it's going on my car, he said he's working on two other cars before mine, and he'll let me know. Last month I was going to fly down and visit, I texted him and he didn't reply, but I also had my flight cancelled the next day so I figured he just didn't reply or whatever, but he always does. He's been helping my mom out ever since I moved out of CA, for years now with anything. I've known him for 20+ years. He always replies to my texts or my mom.

Anyway, my car is still in his driveway. My mom went and asked the neighbors if they have seen him, and they said they haven't seen him for a month. He has a shop in his backyard, and the neighbors pretty much hate him because he is always cutting, grinding or welding all day, all he does is fab stuff or fix up classic cars. So they were happy he stopped, but now that she asked where he is, they also wonder, because he would literally work every single day for I think 3 years now since he built that shop.

Anyway, I've checked the CA arrest database but still haven't had any luck. He and his brothers are estranged, they literally hate each other and his mom only comes by once in a while and I don't have her number. His social media hasn't been updated for a while either. I tried looking up coroner records but I have to have a birthdate and all this other crap, plus its more of a get a death certificate rather than check if someone is dead. Any other ideas?

What’s happening to his mail? Is it still being delivered to his house? If not, then it’s being forwarded or picked up. Send him a letter with a delivery receipt. See what happens.

Even better, include a personal check for a small amount but large enough to be deposited. If it clears, you’ll be able to see the endorsement. It’ll let you know he’s alive and still active.

You could just try straight up asking the mailman or garbage man if they have seen him. If he sets his garbage out i assume he is fine

Have the local sheriff do a welfare check, and file a missing persons. he's been missing over a month, sounds like.

Is his yard mowed? Lights on at night? Online whitepages might have his mother's phone number, contact her or his neighbors on FaceBerg if you have it.

It probably isn't, the gate to his driveway is locked. His phone goes straight to vm and the mailbox is full. I actually reopened my facebook to check him out, the last time he posted was June 24. My mom is going over there right now and will video call me to see what's up.

Wow, that's not good. Be careful about reporting it stolen, as it sounds like it's going to be a civil matter instead of criminal. Don't make a false report. It's a problem when a person or business has your stuff and won't give it back, because it's no longer a police matter.

Best might be if you could just go get it and drive it away. Have the title and all that so you don't end up charged with theft.

If you think he really is missing maybe try and get your car back before the cops become involved. Not legal advice but if he is tied up in some criminal shit they may just take everything as evidence and you will have to jump through hoops to get your car.

What will happen is that the guys with the other cars in the driveway will get pissed off and start their own investigation or call the cops. If he's dead, nothing you can do for him. Let others handle the ugly details.

Contact the electric company and see if they can provide any details of his utility usage. Usually this is a public records issue so it shouldn’t be a problem.

They basically have all access and much much more than police.

Damn, sounds like the neighbors probably aren't close enough for it to make sense to ask for security cam footage as well? If you can get a couple viewpoints of just the road, it might be possible to comb through the footage and figure out when he last traveled to or from his property.
