@Hoobeejoo...you are very close to being 100% correct...a story that was told to me a number of years ago in Banff, was that the teepee rats of today, including throughout Latin/South America, were worthless outcasts from Asia who were forced off the lands, many floated on rafts and large dugout canoes...I don't know how many people here have seen how a dugout canoe is made but it's quite simple and they have a stable buoyancy...legend also has it that the North American teepee rat has been here for no more than a thousand years...also...the pictographs found in various places, particularly around the shores of Lake Superior, are of European origin and in researching some of this it's clearly plausible that teepee rats had nothing to do with these drawings and diagrams as the lithographic vernacular is very similar to that of ancient European cave art.
