I don't think you're correct when you say the name ought to refer to some intrinsic trait about blacks. A term like nigger is meant to refer to the black's nature in the way you're imagining. On the contrary, people invent names that are 'teleological', by which I mean they refer to 'what that person is going to be' or 'what they're destined for' or 'all they're good for'.

I believe 'floppies' is one such name. It refers to the way the body became floppy after it was dead. So, the name is a prediction, a tag, a label for what to do with them.

It would be akin to saying, 'They're already dead, but they don't know it'. If you were to call someone a floppy, you could be saying quite a lot. That might range from insulting their dead comrades, to directly threatening to kill them, or just dehumanizing them by basically calling them target practice.

I'm completely making this up, but you could imagine some boxing club coming up with a name for people, something like: "Chuck". Why? It would refer to ground beef. After someone gets absolutely obliterated in the ring, maybe because they aren't any good, their face looks like ground beef. You might hear the vets at the gym saying about a new guy: "Hey, here's another Chuck." They would probably mean he was about to get his ass handed to him and sent out of the gym like ground beef, never to come back. They 'ate 'im up.'

In the "Chuck" example, there are layers of abstraction to get through: Chuck is sometimes a proper name, but it is also a name for a certain quality of ground beef; then you've got to connect ground beef to the analogy between processed meat and someone's face that has been beat to shit. English slang can be really hard to pick up for this very reason; a given term can involve a few layers like this, and unless you make all the connections, you won't understand the usage.
