How fucking tragic. 25 years old. Dude didn’t do drugs and rarely drank. He was also going to quit Ozzy’s band to study classical music. He practiced his guitar 8 hours a day and gave guitar lessons in his free time. Watching him play guitar is a gift.
That was one hell of a performance! Even Ozzy at the end was smiling and watching on as that bad-ass motherfucker lit up the sky with screaming fireworks.
Always was and remains my favorite guitarist. He was a huge inspiration to me growing up, and primarily on account of his writing ability. Nobody's guitar solos and fills added more to songs than Randy's. Once you listen to him for a while and get accustomed to what he accomplished on literally every song, listening to other players from that era isn't the same. I found myself sometimes dreading the solo sections in other band's songs, because they stand out like intermissions in which a guy wanks around. Randy's solos took the songs to a new level of musical. You don't just get through his parts, you anticipate them. That said, after Randy passed, I thought Jake did a fantastic job; he was criminally underrated.

Thank you for articulating something so perfectly. What he did was more than music, it was like transcendence.
There have been times where I've wondered what Randy would sound like today, I mean with today's technology. The one thing about Randy is that his tone on the studio recordings was not great. He is one of the rare examples whose live sound was astoundingly better than his studio sound. The Tribute album is a great example; his setup sounded phenomenal on those recordings. Once you hear the live version of Mr. Crowley, the studio version guitars sound so crushed. Randy's music was meant to fill up big spaces, haha. I try to imagine what he would have sounded like today, a time when even amateurs can dial in incredible sounds from their bedrooms.
I agree about his tone on the recordings. It just hit me differently seeing this live performance. I felt like such a geek; all I kept thinking was, “THAT TONE!!!!”
I watched his documentary last night and it made me so sad. He genuinely seemed like such a great white man. Kevin Dubrow, the massive jew, always had to put himself as the center of attention in Quiet Riot and drove Randy away. Dubrow’s girlfriend was tired of his cheating kikey ways. He dumped her and Randy started dating her and remained genuine and committed. Sigh.
Then here’s the part that really killed me—no matter where he was on tour, he’d look up guitar teachers and take a lesson. He never thought he was better than anyone else. One of his students mentioned how he thought Van Halen was cool, without understanding the “rivalry” between RR and EVH. Randy learned and taught the kid one of EVH’s solos. RIP to a shining light of a man.
I haven't seen the documentary yet. I need to watch it. I really did not like Quiet Riot much, mostly because of Dubrow. As far as the RR / EVH rivalry, to me they were both great. I think Eddie was pretty cocky, but hey, I probably would've been also. It's a matter of taste, afaic. Eddie's legato playing was next level, esp. with the tapping. I liked Randy's pentatonics/alt picking style, it had this great-sounding percussive quality to it. And Randy just favored that really dark, kind of neo-classical sound that I dig. EVH's style was warm and happy, and Randy's was cold and brooding.
Warm and happy vs. cold and brooding; exactly. Each of those guys’ guitar playing fit perfectly with their respective bands.
I hope you get a chance to watch the documentary, but I’m going to warn you—at times it felt more like a Quiet Riot documentary. That aspect of it was really disappointing.
I heard Ozzy would slap him and belittle him in the studio and Randy was sick of it. Some folks criticize RR for having too much chorus effect in his tone but I like it. He was one of the greatest prodigies we've had the luxury of hearing. Didn't he start Quiet Riot as teen? He truly was gifted and seems like a solid dude. RIP
I believe it. Ozzy has always been a degenerate addict. There were a couple cool stories from the documentary about RR. All he cared about was his mom’s music school. He never stopped giving lessons there, and he recruited his bandmates to do the same. He was over Ozzy and his psychotic ways and was going to teach music theory at universities and give lessons. He didn’t care about the fame.

Edit: Yes, he was a teen while in Quiet Riot.
