Well, yes but no. Autism is distinct from actual retardation because autists can actually be very smart they just tend to be plagued with other issues. Like serious social issues and/or bizarre over sensitivities to light, noise, texture, etc.
It's also measured on a spectrum because not all autists are created equally. Some are so dysfunctional they might as well be classified as retards. Then it's debatable what the effects of all the medications and shit they're given does to them.
