I had bought a car from my friend, and i also then paid to have it serviced and maintained. He decided to hold on to the title, and now says I owe him money if I want him to release the title. He wants me to trade some items to make up the difference, but the one item alone is worth more than the car is ... For those wondering, the items in questions are pre ban AKs, the car in question when bought, was worth 3000.
The car was actually worth way more at one point, my friend completely trashed it though. When it was sold it was meticulous. He wanted to store it, and now there's stains and crap everywhere. But he's claiming I'm actually stealing money from him (he was at best a broker to the transaction) since the car could be worth more money to someone else, so really me paying him a broker transaction is like getting the car for free.
I actually did, and i kept the title with the car because I wanted it all in one place when i get the car registered. This was from years ago and looking back a very dumb idea. I just kind of came back to a car with the wrong name on the title, even though the title was originally transferred properly. I don't even know how this happened since the original bill of sale went to my name, not his. So he must have committed fraud to get the title into his name.
I guess holding on to the title is a bit of a misnomer, since the title was swapped out of nowhere from the new owner (me) to him. I thought he would be holding the original title in the car with the vehicle, not changing the title over to his name.
Hopefully you had him sign a notarized bill of sale. Never buy a car without getting the title swapped at the same time as the money. If you paid money for the car what he is doing is illegal.
Let them know that you need the title and you intend to file a case against them in court. In some cases, this might be sufficient to get what you need.
Do this either text/email or some other written form you can send snail mail but make sure it's signed when delivered to make sure you have proof he received it.
If you were to accidently get a lot of parking tickets, if the car is in his name, all the tickets will go directly to him.
If he's going to insist on this path make damn sure this car is worth nothing before you give it back to him. Not outright vandalism but drain the oil and rev the engine until you spin a bearing and then put oil back in or something like that.
Fuck it, if he's playing dirty forge a bill of sale (in minecraft) and take him to court. Since all the other details line up they'll believe you
You paid someone for a car but allowed them to keep the title? He was planning this shit from the get go. You only keep a title if you plan on keeping the car.
You got scammed. Cut your losses. If you have any proof; if anything is in writing, file in small claims court. If he is as much of a looser as you make him sound he will probably blow off the summons and you can fuck him with the law. If you have no proof, congrats - you gave him the money and you will never see it again.
So you paid for a car, paid for it to be serviced, never took possession of the car, he continued to use it and trashed it and now he says you owe him money for the car?
Recap question. You say you "bought" a car. So you handed over money, but didn't ask for a title or a bill of sale?
Anyway, the time to ask questions if before, not after a transaction. Look this shit up on the internet beforehand. Unless it was you, that is You, are the retard here (and I have my suspicions based on your poor writing skills) and didn't catch the actual nuances of the transaction when you conducted it, the advice to get a new "friend" is solid. It's his car until you get a title, which you don't have.
Might consider recapping the details in an email and send it to your "buddy" asking what he thought the sale details were, at least that way you "might" have a written record and standing not to get locked up for car theft later (assuming your version is the truth).

You can get another car, but AKs are far, far more difficult.

He's screwing you over a car because wants what you have. Make damn sure he doesn't get anything of yours. He's treating you like shit.
