Are there any Southern Californians here who remember Sheriff John?

I used to watch him when I was kid. He had a daily daytime show on KTTV channel 11 (a local channel) that began in the 50s and lasted until 1970. He stressed patriotism, discipline, duty, including doing your chores, personal grooming. He would show cartoons including Underdog, Crusader Rabbit, and Porky Pig, and had birthday celebrations where he would read the names of boys and girls having a birthday that week.

It was very wholesome television for young people, which sadly was replaced in the 1970s by whatever current thing was going on. I always had good memories of his show because he was just a decent man.

Here's a picture of him in character.

In the seventies in NorCal, we had Captain Mitch. Same kind of thing. He ran the after school cartoons on KTXL 40 Sacramento. I got to meet him as a very old man around 2010 at a theater house. He was involved in some stage work there. He was surprised anyone remembered him. I was like, “are you kidding?, we raced home to watch you every day”. Nice man.

That's a really sweet remembrance.

Local TV programming was very important for independent stations. PT Anderson's dad did a show in Philadelphia playing a character called Ghoulardi, which is now the name of Anderson's production company.

Another guy I liked was a guy called Seymour on Los Angeles station KHJ channel nine who did this bit where he would introduce bad movies and occasionally interrupt them with snarky comments. He died in the mid 70s, and then Cassandra popped up in the 80s doing the same thing with his act, except she had tits. She also stole her look from Maila Nurmi, who was in some Ed Wood, Jr movies under the name Vampira, and had a TV show in the 50s introducing bad movies. Cassandra got a lot further with it, I guess because of the tits.

Underdog RULED! Do you remember his girlfriend's name? Sweet Polly pure bread comes to mind but that may have been another show.

No, you're right, her name was Sweet Polly Purebred (like dogs are pure bred). I though the Underdog show had THE best cartoon theme and music. It was even showcased on Scrubs with the acapella group.

Never heard of him. But then he was before my time. Thanks for the reference.

From what you've said of him I think I prefer this guy that died in Southern California in the 70s.

I don't remember him ever having a TV show.
