If the retards in Ukraine had begun torture-murdering ethnic Russians in the name of communism instead, then Russia would have (finally) gone in to "stop communism".

Russia's crackdown on the far right has been directed at enemies of the state internally and Russophobes in Ukraine. Of course they're going to crack down on those.

The question is more who they can use to hurt their enemies. Even hostile parties can be useful if that is the objective. Russia for example has accused the US of using al Qaeda type jihadists against them. It's what can be used as a tool while mitigating the blowback. Right now the United States is a bigger threat to Russia than any prospective secessionist white ethnostate on US soil. And though the latter would be very dangerous to them as well that danger is overridden by destroying/breaking up their arch-foe the US.

Of course that this is obvious to anyone with any understanding of geopolitics or national security issues is needless to say.

I'd think it is fairly transparent. Other than possibly the US Russia has the most accomplished history in supporting insurgents against state opponents. Defaming Russia then is about confusing American dissidents, neutralizing the threat. Prevent the insurgency before it can even start.
