Lack of Follow-up

submitted by Trope to Anecdotal 9 monthsJul 30, 2023 00:26:33 ago (+21/-1)     (Anecdotal)

Wanted to share this as I believe it can bring value to you and your family. It has become quickly evident that most people are lacking when it comes to followup. This applies in the workplace and in business. And likely everywhere else.

Sure, I can easily place the blame on others, but when I assume ownership of all things that happen to me, knowing full well people are busy with their own work and projects and lack in the ability to respond and follow up, I can make the right amount of effort to request followup as needed.

Most sales are lost because salesmen give up after three tries without a response. You could very well reach out to every lead and previous client. Their failure to reply is not an objection.

My best friend and I began our business after calling the broker every day for a month without an answer. My friend expressed his concern that we would end up pissing this guy off by leaving a voice mail every day. I explained there is no shame in wanting to make a deal. So we proceeded to call this guy every single day. We did eventually get ahold of him - Today he is now a partner of ours. We would have lost this opportunity if we simply would had stopped trying.

While managing an understaffed cafe, the irony was managers didn't have time to call back any of the applicants. An applicant called me asking for follow-up. This person set herself apart from all the other applicants so I wrote down her name made sure someone called her in to start. Someone with the courage to express an interest in working set themself apart from the pile of applicants from lazy kids with no work ethic.

In a previous era, Reddit always downvoted the “Pull yourself up by your bootstraps” mantra of hitting the pavement and handing your resume to an employer. Despite the complaints of these no-getting teenage doomers, this technique works incredibly well for entry level positions. To them, it became a boomer trope to walk into a place with your resume but it literally works. A man needs a sense of salesmanship.

To end his, I will reprise the story of my ex vegan friend who is absolutely an interesting case study worthy of post-mortem discussion for years to come. He had sent me text out of the blue. A youtube video and a long one at that. I asked him why he had sent it to me. To explain: I wanted him to sell me on watching it. I wanted him to share his excitement and passion with me on why I should watch some random video. Surely, he had a good reason and believed I would find value in it. His response to me: “Just watch.” My response: “Hard sell.” To which he disdainfully replied: “Not everything is a sale”. I had to tell this kid that I would absolutely love to be sold on an idea. Especially from a friend. That was the straw the broke the camel’s back and ended the friendship. You know what would have worked better for this guy? If he followed up and made an effort to make me watch his stupid video instead of taking personal offense that I was busy that day and requested convincing. He should have followed up. Instead he broke down. His stupid youtube channel is going to continue to be a failure not because he isn't completely sold on his ideas but because he refuses to sell them

Anyway, have a great weekend, niggerfaggots. We call each other this not because we believe we are so, but because are free call each other so.

Thank you for the read niggerfaggot, I gleaned a lot of info on how my younger self SHOULD have acted.

Thanks, dude. I think I can sum up nearly all of my past mistakes in a single sentence: Lack of a good coach. The lack of a father figure seems to be what is single-handedly destroying all of society. My ex vegan friend, of my entire circle of derelict friends, was always the softest and weakest. Sure as shit, the kid never had a father.

I have been dealing with this EVERYWHERE the last 3 years. I fucking do the follow up for everyone even when it's not my job. People say they'll get back to you but they drop the task.

[ - ] Trope [op] 0 points 9 monthsJul 31, 2023 00:27:12 ago (+0/-0)

Not gonna lie, I got really busy on Friday and have to call this dude first thing tomorrow because I didn't have time to het back to him. No worries though, no one will be upset.

Isn’t it also a known sales tactic called the 5x rule or something. You ask once they say no again they say no, third time they’re now irritated a little, 4th time they’re sounding annoyed and a stern decline, and finally the fifth time you ask, magically, it turns into the potential customer RESPECTING you for being persistent and staying on them! Then they buy, not because they even want the product, more so because you asked them 5 times even tho they kept rejecting you. It’s a strange but very real phenomenon. People like persistence even if it’s awkward that third and fourth time asking it’s like dude didn’t I just tell you no twice? But the fifth time everything somehow changes. Biatch!

I chased the fucking internet guy off my lawn a few weeks back. If he comes back I might need to introduce him to Fat Tina.

Fat Tina

A good name for a problem solver.

[ - ] fuck_usernames -1 points 7 monthsSep 19, 2023 05:03:47 ago (+0/-1)

Lol! If he knows about the rule, you may have cable soon! Lol. Don’t tell me you wouldn’t be impressed by the sheer gusto of a kid knocking on your door for the fifth week in a row knowing you’ve rejected him all those times before only to persist ? It’s respectable. First irritating, then admirable. It’s real lol try it. Because asking five times is like begging without begging. It’s impressive. I’ve done it many many times. It works.

It also takes some kind of character or balls or something to do this.

[ - ] Trope [op] 0 points 9 monthsJul 31, 2023 00:24:52 ago (+0/-0)

Wouldnt surprise me if there is truth to this. I think people only have so much resistance especially when they are dealing with an internal battle. Ie “i knownI shouldn't buy this car but I really want to.” Suddenly here’s 2 votes for buying the car once your resistance has worn thin.

[ - ] Jiggggg 2 points 9 monthsJul 30, 2023 13:10:15 ago (+2/-0)

Wonderful post. I had this same conversation recently. I have several potential gigs lined up, but everyone is so, so flaky that it's hard to schedule things. I find myself constantly having to almost nag people into responding. The funny thing is that they are never mad, but rather apologetic.

I think for a lot of people, after a certain period of time has gone by without responding, they are embarrassed to respond because they'll have to explain why they took so long to get back to you, so it's easier just to ghost you. By reaching out to them first without shaming them, you're giving them an opportunity to save face. Everybody wins

We call each other this not because we believe we are so, but because are free call each other so.
I've told several people in real life that my favorite word is Niggerfaggot, because it shows me who is a free thinker and who clutches their pearls and gets offended by a sound.

It hits home hard for me atm, because I'm looking for a new job, missed about 6 calls, mainly because I want a different job, feel bad I'm ignoring these guys.

Maybe I need to try harder for the one I want?

Good pep talk, niggerfaggot.

[ - ] Trope [op] 1 point 9 monthsJul 31, 2023 00:29:41 ago (+1/-0)

Might be better to take any job for now while you continue searching for a better one.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with making multiple deals at the same time when you only intend to close on one.

This applies to all things in life. May as well make money while you're looking for a job.

[ - ] fuck_usernames 0 points 8 monthsAug 25, 2023 06:07:54 ago (+0/-0)

This is terrible advice right here sir! ITS HELLA RUDE TO START A JOB, even a minimum wage job, and then quit after you did the paperwork and training for another better job two weeeks later! Waste of everyone’s time. If there’s a specific job you want, then you should only be pursuing that one.

[ - ] Trope [op] 0 points 8 monthsSep 3, 2023 21:52:48 ago (+0/-0)

I respectfully disagree if you’re broke. If money is not an issue, then it is good that you are being respectful of other people’s time.

[ - ] fuck_usernames 0 points 7 monthsSep 19, 2023 04:55:50 ago (+0/-0)

I was actually writing the post because I remember getting treated like a douche bag by an entire crew of fellow employees because I quit shortly after starting, knowing I had some in between time before my next job that I really cared about. Even my manger snubbed me when I put my two weeks notice in. So it could go either way I suppose.

[ - ] fuck_usernames 0 points 7 monthsSep 19, 2023 04:56:56 ago (+0/-0)

I also agree with you, if you’re broke then it is what it is and you must get by somehow. I was saying how employers don’t always dig that because of time invested in training etc.

[ - ] Anus_Expander 2 points 9 monthsJul 30, 2023 06:43:14 ago (+2/-0)

Just a month or two ago, I was looking at jobs on Craigslist. I found an interesting ad, the guy said at the end to reply with resume. So I sent him an email
It said ‘FUCK RESUMES!’ And my phone number.
He called me four minutes later for an interview that day. I said I’m busy. But anyway

[ - ] Trope [op] 0 points 9 monthsJul 31, 2023 00:12:31 ago (+0/-0)

Interesting. Gonna watch this video.

Yea man, I had written about him in a previous post. Always felt bad for the dude but kept him in my life because many of us have been through hard times in our 20s. But after the last time we hung out, I realized despite him being a straight male, he was feminine in his mind and grew up without any father or father figures. All his role models have killed themselves too which is even stranger.

I believe this to be the case. I hurt his feelings because every day of life for him is Russian Roulette. Will he wake up able to face the day or miserably depressed and unable to function? But hey, that’s how you know the vegan diet is working!

Meanwhile on the steak diet, you wake up every morning and slay.

Do people really expect that much effort for a shit job? Honestly probably why I never got hired for that type of stuff when I was younger. I've never made less than $50k a year even as a punk 17 year old kid (and that was a while ago when that was good money).

Guess you have to accept that a shit job is the paramount of your worth and aggressively seek it in order to land one of those lol. I half ass applied to those while putting in actual effort to skilled positions that had advancement and overtime opportunities.

I always wondered how people end up in shitty ass fucking jobs like that cause they never wanted to call or hire me. Guess you really do need to believe that's all your worth and really try to get that $8/hr bullshit job lmfao

I really don't think it's "lazy kids". More and more people realize it's not worth putting in effort for something that's inevitably going to garner you a shitty existence. I am glad that I put in half ass resumes, never followed up, and no showed interviews for those jobs. I would not be where I am today if I actually pursued those like they were worthy of my time and relegated myself to bring subservient to someone who views me as such.

[ - ] TheOriginal1Icemonkey 3 points 9 monthsJul 30, 2023 00:45:21 ago (+3/-0)

I had my fair share of shit teir jobs as a youngster, and I’m killing it now. I too made 40k, in my case, back when that was 4x the going wage for an 18 year old. However, I can’t claim I had any valuable skills at 17. Just what the hell did you do at 17 to make 50k, and in what year? I’m talking 1988 for me.
Edit: I did roofing at 18.

Doing automotive detailing in the 1990s for a dealership. Back then it was flat rate pay. If you hustled and kicked ass you could pocket good commissions quickly. Stuff like buffing cars, wet sanding, touch ups, full interior cleanings etc. After getting the hang of it you learn certain tricks and can beat the clock. That's what ultimately got me into wrenching because the mechanics were making even more from being efficient on flat rate jobs. I eventually left the automotive side of things because the industry became more and more toxic to mechanics and cars become impossible to "beat the book".

[ - ] TheOriginal1Icemonkey 1 point 9 monthsJul 30, 2023 12:53:21 ago (+1/-0)

I too came up piece working. It’s the only way to go.

[ - ] HeyJames 1 point 9 monthsJul 30, 2023 16:20:57 ago (+1/-0)

I'm at the point where I don't rush now. Flat rate days are over. No need when your experience ensures efficiency. The focus now is on quality work with no mistakes done efficiently and precisely as possible.

[ - ] TheOriginal1Icemonkey 0 points 9 monthsJul 30, 2023 19:51:56 ago (+0/-0)

I am now in a salary position, paid by the company I own. My hump ass days are over for sure.

[ - ] Trope [op] 0 points 9 monthsJul 30, 2023 00:50:14 ago (+0/-0)

What ended up working for you? At a young age, what ended up getting you to where you needed to be? To agree with your point, I once had a good discussion with a punk kid who worked a job he didnt give a hoot about, saved his money, and bought a truck with landscapping equipment. Kid started his own business making great money proving to me audacity could get us further than wit. Or rather we require just enough wit to be audacious.

I cannot speak for those who make a career of a low-end job, but the question I have is: How have we gotten to an era where it has become optional for teenagers? When I wanted a car, I needed to work. When I wanted to pay for a formal education, I needed to work for it. But when I describe “lazy kids”, what I’ve been seeing is a surprising amount of young men and women who simply have no need to leave the comfort of their parent’s homes. The standard of living seems so absurdly high for a young person with working class parents these days. But this may be an entirely separate conversation.

[ - ] HeyJames 1 point 9 monthsJul 30, 2023 00:55:52 ago (+1/-0)

To be honest I spent too many years working hard and making decent money but staying on the liquid jew chasing women and having not as much to show for it as I should.

I found something I was passionate about and took it seriously. Got education and certifications to impress the soft hand office fucks but the real training is in the trenches with the grumpy old fuckers who hate young guys but eventually soften up and teach you the trade when you prove your not a shit head.

Next step is opening up my own service center, getting field crews and calling the shots.

[ - ] Trope [op] 4 points 9 monthsJul 30, 2023 01:06:30 ago (+4/-0)

I too wish I would have stopped drinking sooner. Are we really being the best we can be while wasting our time drunk? Today I see alcoholism as not the problem but rather the symptom of something bigger. In the people I see still drinking, it is evident that this is a learned behavior to let-loose and indulge in direct response for a life unfulfilled. I won’t say my days drinking weren't fun. In fact, in all the things I was doing, it was perhaps the most fun and most rewarding activity, But the that tree did not bear much fruit. Today we can find the same passionate joy by growing trees that will bear much fruit for years to come.

I hope you get that service center.

[ - ] HeyJames 3 points 9 monthsJul 30, 2023 01:22:28 ago (+3/-0)

Alcohol is very compelling when you're young and the world is telling you to seek pleasure. The women are compelling but just end up costing money and precious time. If i could do it all over again I would literally just fuck prostitutes and limit drinking to 1 or 2 days a month.

I hope you get that service center.

That's the dream. Getting a fleet together of service bodies and sending them out on jobs with great mechanics. I have no interest in babysitting people. Field mechanics are used to working independently and handling their own shit. Daddy will of course have his own rig and come out as well when needed.

A few years off yet but it's coming
