AE is having a bad influence on you. He is a man of unutterable evil and will warp your soul into fragments of glass.

I am just about the opposite of a hoarder. I gave away all my things, from the tv to the fridge. My apartment is borderline empty, and I make 70k per years with no debt, of course I never buy anything either. I have 1 plate, 1 fork, 1 spoon, I sleep on the floor, the only appliance I have are laundry machines, microwave and a small pizza oven. I don't even own a phone, but my work lend me one for free.

I could buy a house whenever, but I just don't see the point of doing that. Plus, I have no drive to impress anyone, I like my little life as it is.

If you have a mattress on the floor or a flat surface and use it, your body will give off enough moisture that it will become trapped in it and start to mold. That is why they use slats on a bed frame. To allow the mattress to breath out the other side.

I have a non-fabric mattress over a yoga mat I found somewhere. I guess it's still possible but its only 4 inches thick, so im not that worried about it. Plus, I am just a few hours away from the artic circle, its only humid for a few weeks per years.

[ - ] paul_neri 0 points 9 monthsJul 28, 2023 21:03:54 ago (+0/-0)

Correct. I use a foam mats.Had a bamboo mat once but it got moldy.Sleeping on a hard flat surface is good for your back if you suffer from lower back pain. Since I started sleeping on the floor my bad-back episodes went from about 3-4 p.a. to 1. I hope you found this interesting and helpful.

I've slept on a yoga mat for a while following an injury. Only way I could sleep. Then I upgraded to this thing: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N1TJXE5/

Then I upgraded to a hammock I bought for $60. It is much better than sleeping on the floor. Sometimes I still sleep on the floor though. But most of the time I choose hammock.

Example hammock: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07L3MB8LD/

[ - ] paul_neri 0 points 9 monthsJul 28, 2023 21:08:58 ago (+0/-0)

Well it works for you (hammock) but I'd be a cripple in the morning. My strong suggestion is you return to sleeping on the floor.

Minimalism is the way to go. Ultimately our only possession is our carcass.

Oh bro. A topic close to my heart and the source of my perpetual nervous breakdown. My missus is a hoarder. Not in the worse category like you see on tv but bad enough. About 15 years ago she decided she'd tidy up the living room at the shack. You couldn't walk in a straight line through the room; you had to walk through a maze of little paths flanked by clutter. Anyway...she sent me off to buy some plastic storage containers and I bought maybe 4 of 5 of the biggest the shop had. She did nothing and the empty storage containers became part of the clutter and are still there packed against a wall!

Okay now i understand why you are such a faggot. My condolences.

Enlist some help:

https://hoarders.com/support-groups-help-for-families/

You'll also want to rent a storage container and put all her stuff in it and have it hauled to the wrecking yard by your local garbologist.

[ - ] paul_neri 0 points 9 monthsJul 28, 2023 20:28:59 ago (+0/-0)*

She's not the kind of person who responds well to outside interference. We did rent a storage container and for many years I was paying $50-$100 pw (from memory) for bric-a-brac worth maybe $100 if that. This went on for years and I reckon I spent $10,000 on it and when we got the shack aka a larger storage container, I moved all her junk to there and she's never forgiven me. If she had her way I'd still be shelling out. Hoarders have an irrational brain. This is someone who doesn't read their mail and lets it pile up and then when she does get around to it has a breakdown when she learns her health insurance is to be cancelled for non-payment of premiums.

Does she hoard specific things or just everything?

[ - ] paul_neri 4 points 9 monthsJul 28, 2023 05:48:49 ago (+5/-1)*

Specific things and she has fads, terrible fads. The specific things are empty plastic containers and plastic bags. The fads...a type of cardboard box from the supermarket...a type of seaweed. The seaweed fad was the worst because I'd end up carrying home a bag of dripping sea weed. We couldn't go for a walk on the f..king beach without her pulling out a plastic bag and collecting a certain type of seaweed, not any old seaweed. But the latest fad is stones from the beach which she quite happily stuffs in my pack, she won't take one for some reason and so I'm lugging a couple of kilos of f..king rocks 3-4 kms home ffs! Sorry I'm getting a bit emotional but it's a sore point with me - literally!

We once bought a small plastic garbage container for the kitchen in which to put non-smelly items such as plastic wrapping which we'd put in plastic bags for the main garbage bin. She filled the container up, including on its lid, with plastic bags for the waste such that there was no room for the waste and the bin was never used.

I care about her and she has her good points. She's the only woman who ever took a motherly-type interest in me (makes sure I have enough food when I go off somewhere; took an interest in my appearance - bought me clothes etc. I had a remote, cold, uninterested mother). And...but for the fact she worked as a teenager and saved her money for a house deposit which set us on the road to a relaxed and comfortable life, I'd be a bum in the gutter.

Wtf! Don't you think I've been trying, man, these past 40 years? The quickest way to get a punch flying at your face (she's got a ferocious temper and doesn't pull her punches) is to put her under any kind of pressure. Not only does the tiny fist appear but out tumble 40 years of recriminations from a well rehearsed list.

[ - ] PeckerwoodPerry 5 points 9 monthsJul 28, 2023 07:46:50 ago (+5/-0)

Scars. Got a ton of 'em.

[ - ] JustALover 5 points 9 monthsJul 28, 2023 06:58:32 ago (+5/-0)

Building materials: lumber, screws, sealant, etc.

Not tools, though. Only need like 2 of each tool and that's enough.

[ - ] PotatoWhisperer2 0 points 9 monthsJul 28, 2023 13:59:12 ago (+0/-0)

I have a ton of tools. All leftovers of fixing shit myself because I can never trust a "professional" most of the time. That and the hundreds of different hobbies I've dabbled in over the years. Woodworking and a few others have stuck around though.

[ - ] HeyJames 4 points 9 monthsJul 28, 2023 09:24:02 ago (+4/-0)

I have alot of wood stashed for carpentry projects. Granted it's all on shelves. Comes in handy actually

Ammunition.

I have a seriously absurd amount of ammo.

I try to keep 6 months of anything that can be stored that long. During the plandemic, when everyone was out of things, and no store in town had some things, we were out of eggs for about 36 hours. That was it. We never ran out of anything else. We ran out of eggs because we were only stocking about 36 eggs. Now we stock 60, which is still not a 6-month supply, but it's what we can do given space limitations.

I have dozens of electric guitars, but only play a few, the rest are decorations

[ - ] psykx 2 points 9 monthsJul 28, 2023 09:37:06 ago (+2/-0)

My vinyl record collection is growing. It's not at hoarding status yet but it's getting larger every year. It's tiny compared to some record collections but I didn't start buying vinyl til 2013.

[ - ] usedoilanalysis 2 points 9 monthsJul 28, 2023 06:33:11 ago (+2/-0)

Tools and good used car parts for rare collectible cars. One man's waste is another man's soap.

[ - ] OoklaTheMok 1 point 9 monthsJul 28, 2023 20:48:37 ago (+1/-0)

Guitar and music gear, tools, wood (for building shit and campfires) fishing gear and booze. oh, and ammo for the guns that are at the bottom of the lake. Boating accident...don't ask.

[ - ] paul_neri 2 points 9 monthsJul 28, 2023 05:52:17 ago (+2/-0)

frozen meat. Lots of venison, and good bit of beef. Whenever there is a good price on pork or chicken at the store I buy a lot. I have 3 deep freezers plus the freezer on the main refrigerator. I bought 5 whole turkeys one year after thanksgiving cause there were $10 a piece, I have only eaten 1...

Lots of it probably is no longer good and needs to be thrown out. Time to feed the fish I suppose.

I hate hoarders. They suck ass. They are married to their possessions. Everything I own I can fit in my car, excluding my tool box and big pieces of weight training equipment, if I use a roof rack and hitch box. I just have a car not an SUV or anything big.

[ - ] paul_neri 0 points 9 monthsJul 28, 2023 21:25:12 ago (+0/-0)

I agree they are very irritating especially when they are on death's door and leave a huge mess for someone else (kids) to clean up. There's something called "death cleaning" as of late.
