I think it's really because we're out-gunned at the moment. Orwell had a theory about the historical correlation between freedom and weapons, which is basically that freedoms exist at times when weapons are affordable and plenty. I think we're on the tale end of that era. It's not out of reach, but we'd all have to live like afghan savages for generations, and even then, winning our freedom isn't certain. Like you said, it's too hard right now. Btw Snotflix and media in general are weapons that we don't really have access to.
