The problem with that thinking is you don't understand how the regime thinks.
First, the regime is being run by defacto criminals.

They assume because they are criminals, that anyone who says they follow the law is bullshitting--just like them.

Which is why they fearmogner constantly about "white terrorism" and "rightwing extremists."
They fear that the appeals to being law-abiding are bullshit, so when the middle (because the modern right is just the alienated middle) make noise, it tightens the federal occupation government's sphincter.

The problem with this entire process is because these people are antagonistic psychopaths, their only model for maintaining control in an environment where they feel their control is threatened, is to double down with the bravado--namely the rando shitlib b-listers on twitter/cnn/fox talking about "white rage", and various violent flavors of "get whitey."
It's not antagonism born from total control. It's antagonism born from fear.

Their thinking process is this
1. create a crisis

2. seize more emergency powers

3. stupidly, and rightly worry 24/7 from their guarded homes in D.C that the alienation created by their powergrabs will result in some non-zero percentage of the public physically going after them, their family, and/or property.

4. doubledown through bravado, hoping it demoralizes people by making the regime look invincible. "We gotta censor the small minority of violent rightwing whitenat bigots!". They think this sort of messaging makes the people targetted, the political middle (the majority, whether we know that or not) less likely to become alienated, by replacing the alienation with a perception of powerlessness.

5. Past a certain point, step four stops working. So now the regime is forced, by habit to double down, instead of let off the pedal. A new parralel process begins where infighting and partisan virtue-signalling means anyone who tries to decelerate this process is in turn labelled or treated with suspicion.

it's the same process as witchhunting.

We can't change the regime's course, but we can force the trend further, which will destroy them and everything they love.

Their fear and overreaction against the american public? That should be leaned into, enhanced, pushed further, at every turn, wherever possible.
