20 Year Roof, MY ASS! A Roof Should be Designed to Last Forever.

submitted by Puller_of_Noses to TellUpgoat 9 monthsJul 25, 2023 05:29:50 ago (+5/-1)     (TellUpgoat)

Asphalt Shingles are easy and cheap and effective, but a real roof is made by White craftsmen, and it will last a lifetime.
And then some.

No roof lasts forever. How long a roof lasts is directly proportional to the upfront cost. This is a simple long term/short term cost analysis. Even 'forever' roofs like slate tile need maintenance.

GAF makes asphalt shingles that last 50 years but its more money. The average homeowner owns the property for about nine years. Depends what your priorities are.

I'm a roofer. BP warranties their shitty shingles 40 years. They last on average about 15-20 years on the south side of the roof.

The whole industry is retarded.

So what kind of roof should I get? Slate sounds like a lot of work. Is metal any good?

My roofing guy said shingles have a 50 year life...

standing seam is my favorite roof. Lasts a hell of a long time and it looks nice too.

I like it. ...Added to the long term house project list.

You might know about this... any recommendations on repairing cracked mortar on a chimney? I have the brick seal spray shit and then was going to get the gap and crack filler. Other than that, I would need to do a tuck point job with an angle grinder and I don't want to.

If the mortar is cracked, first look at your footing to make sure it isn't failing. If it's cracked from freezing and thawing, find where the water is getting in and seal it with hydraulic cement.
Also make sure there the is a small air gap between your chimney cap and the liner. If there isn't The cap will trap moisture. It will also lift off the chimney when you have a fire in the winter.

I actually have some of that cement already. How do I squirt it in a crack? Is there a special tool? I would otherwise use a cement trowel but I am not sure it would get in the crack.

You press it in with a pointing tool or If you have man hands you just use your thumb.
Just work fast because each batch you mix will only last a few minutes. Don't use any rusty tools because they will make the cement flash faster.

Most roofs do outlast the owner...it's the water proofing that deteriorates.

Can you even buy asphalt shingles there? Cruise the streets of Melbourne on streetview and there are none to be seen.
