We made do, did other things. Going to the beach or a park was a routine weekend. Clothing wasn't a big expense, but then I didn't need to spend a shit-ton on me. Kids always looked nice and were taken care of, but we shopped Target, hell even Wal-mart when needed. Food, as the lady says, wasn't a HUGE expense with kids. Milk, eggs, butter, bread, flour, rice, beans, hamburger when we wanted--the staples we always had to prepare meals because eating out was, and remains, stupid and expensive. We had one car for awhile, and the wife stayed home and planned activities and taught them knitting, gardening, how to make meals, daily exercise and walks to the local playground...
We had plenty of friends, and when they were older, we had the kids do recreational sports like soccer or volleyball (which doesn't cost much in either the fee or the gear needed); and we enjoyed life. The simple things have brought so much pleasure.

It gave me discipline and confidence so I could do what I thought was my inherent destiny, along with providing me with the job skills I could use to do that.
I got out of the navy in the 90s because it wasn't an environment where I could live, let along flourish in. I had some fallow years until I moved to Silicon Valley in the late 90s. I was very prosperous then until the dot com boom, and lost a great deal of money along with my livelihood.
I had to move in with my dad after being unable to find work there for 14 months (which is not an uncommon story, but it was very typical there in those days). I slowly brought myself up job-wise and financially after a few years. It wasn't like Silicon Valley, but I could support my family well, and that was ALL I ever focused on.

I dont know how you guys feel about chemicals but rockin' green and charlies soap helped tremoundosly. Mollys suds was alright. they were already expensive i would have to relook at the prices for now but it makes the washing go so much quicker.
Oh and if she is looking at buying used diapers or if someone is gifting her used be careful they do start breaking down at around 3 years.
Plus side at some pools (if you guys ever go toa public/private one) will only accept cloth ones because those disposable swimmers only hold so much water.
I preferred the charcoal liners but keep in mind they are kind of thicker so more drying time and stay away from fabric softeners and dryer sheets with them. If you have a clothesline the sun is the best disinfectant.
They also have a a little pail with a sprayer but the toilet one is so much more convinient. Oh and something no one told me early on you can double padding one regular one charcoal for extra security. Especially at nighttime.

I got out of the navy in the 90s because it wasn't an environment where I could live, let along flourish in. I had some fallow years until I moved to Silicon Valley in the late 90s. I was very prosperous then until the dot com boom, and lost a great deal of money along with my livelihood.
I had to move in with my dad after being unable to find work there for 14 months (which is not an uncommon story, but it was very typical there in those days). I slowly brought myself up job-wise and financially after a few years. It wasn't like Silicon Valley, but I could support my family well, and that was ALL I ever focused on.
I'm terribly sorry to hear of your wife's miscarriage. For us, the wife and me, the last time we tried, the missus had a miscarriage, and it took a lot out of her, so you have my deepest understanding how difficult that is.

This was close to 27-28 years ago. I could make the house payment (about $500, I remember that), all utilities and insurance, feeding and clothing the kids and us--which we didn't have much, I had two pairs of jeans for work, lasted for awhile. Again, shopping target/walmart when needed. Gasoline...whatever else. Did I save a ton? No. Did I have to beg/borrow? No. Were we happy? Yeah, we had a fulfilled life. We also didn't compare ourselves to what other people had.
After that 18 months or so, got a job making $60k--which was like night and day, a 50% increase, then continued to get paid for my skillsets. We moved, kids did more, we did more, I think we took our first family vacation when the oldest was 8. Drove to Canada. It was nice.

Oh and if she is looking at buying used diapers or if someone is gifting her used be careful they do start breaking down at around 3 years.
Plus side at some pools (if you guys ever go toa public/private one) will only accept cloth ones because those disposable swimmers only hold so much water.
I preferred the charcoal liners but keep in mind they are kind of thicker so more drying time and stay away from fabric softeners and dryer sheets with them. If you have a clothesline the sun is the best disinfectant.
They also have a a little pail with a sprayer but the toilet one is so much more convinient. Oh and something no one told me early on you can double padding one regular one charcoal for extra security. Especially at nighttime.

My very traditional, stay-at-home wife, one (1) each, home-schooled all six of our kids (and gave after-school tutoring to whole bunch of others) on the academic side (I took the reins for shop, basic car and house repair and maintenance and outside stuff), and they have all been vastly better off for it. Pretty easy really. You just keep doing the stuff that you normally do anyway, but just narrate and explain as you go along.
One home schooling tip: If you are homeschooling, you can get the same discounts on school supplies that teachers get, because you're their teacher (At least down here they do. Can't really speak for the non-Free states.)
