HOW MANY ROUNDS DID IT TAKE FOR THIS BARREL TO HEAT LIKE THIS?

I'm assuming that this is a NATO .50cal. Ammo spent in futility no doubt. Heat sag has a negative effect on trajectory.
That weapon alone is about 30K out of the factory, after the arms dealers make their cut I'll bet it's 3x the price...now factor in the ammo @ $8.00 per rnd x 1million rnds per package, and belted to 27ft lengths.

After 10rnds out of my .50 Steyer, that's 2 full mags in about 25 seconds, water sizzles on the barrel, I've seen cleaning solvent smoke when swabbing my barrel...generally I swab every 3rnds for accuracy and to avoid a buildup of copper particulate.

This must have been one fuck of a fire fight.

That happens every time a platoon is trained on the .50
Maybe 3,000 rounds sent down range in one hour.

Dayum, past time to change that thing out. The barrel appears to be sagging! Heat treat is gone, time to toss it and stuff a new barrel in. Never seen one so hot. Likely not NATO .50 cal but Russian. What I've seen of some russian ordinance - that shit is significantly overbuilt. So double dayum.

The NSV uses Russian 12.7×108mm ammo and has a cyclic rof of 700-800 rpm.
US .50 cal is 12.7×99mm. The rounds are not compatible.

The NSV was intended as an AA weapon, to be fired in short bursts with several seconds between bursts. Look at that barrel. Compare it to the M2 HB, which was intended as a multirole HMG.

The Finns use them too: https://web.archive.org/web/20171113060329/http://maavoimat.fi/itkk

You see this kind of silly shit with untrained gunners with poor leadership. They go through their entire basic load in the first couple of minutes of a fight because they're scared and it makes them feel better, as if they're "doing something" (regardless of whether there's anyone actually out there or not). There's a big difference between "doing something", and doing something effective.

One of the first things you learn on your first combat deployment is to avoid indig forces at night. Their whole perimeter will light up the treeline at cyclic rate to keep the boogie man at bay, because one guy thought he heard/saw something and started firing.

That barrel is now trash. That guy just fucked his whole unit either through incompetence, fear, or misuse/abuse, deprived his unit of a weapon capable of dealing with light armor, like BMPs, BTRs, BRDMs, etc. How many of those do you think they have in their TO&E?.

If you disable your own weapon in a gunfight because you burned it and all of your ammo up shaking it like a beaded rattle at the treeline to keep the evil spirits away, you don't get to bitch when they just walk up and blow your head off.

Or these days just use the continous huge muzzle flash to mark your location for a drone-delivered mortar round.
So there is something to be said for fire discipline.

Was at the range with my glock yesterday, after not exactly cleaning it previously. Shot fantastic and was accurate until last mag. Suddenly its all over the place. Havent looked at it yet, or even cleaned it yet. I sped through the last 2 extended mags and it was already hot. Hopefully it was shooting poorly from just being suddenly dirty but this is the type of image my mind wonders about.

You thought your Glock barrel might look like OP's .50 after a couple extended mags at the range? None of this happened.
