Data privacy: how to counter the “I have nothing to hide” argument?

submitted by BarryWW to whatever 10 monthsJul 19, 2023 23:40:03 ago (+4/-0)     (whatever)

Are you okay with these?

Big tech companies stealing your data and making fortunes from it, spying on your browser and checking what products you have looked up...

Handing out your email address and phone number, so they can use it to link to your true identity or other social media platform accounts.

After all, it is becoming increasingly difficult to protect personal privacy on the internet these days.

Those who do not need privacy because they have nothing to hide, do not need freedom of speech because they have nothing to say.

Do you close the door when you take a shit? If so, what are you really doing in there that you need to hide?

Ask them them for their bank details, Social Security Number, and the keys to their house.

Ask them to unlock their phone and give it to you and then start reading their search history out loud.

I had that brief argument with some ancient boomers. 'We have nothing to hide!'--'Oh rilly? Give me your email password. I promise not to read your emails, but even if I would, you have nothing to hide anyways, right?' They had no answer.

Why share anything?

"As long as your opinion is the same as the big banks, you'll be left alone.

When the pig banks & the go fund me corporation took the protesters money, they made it possible to do the same to any protester at all for whatever reason.

When the Soviet Operation Trust was repeated for the Q conspiracy, the big banks and go fund me did the same and threw them all in jail. The Soviets shot them all so I guess that makes you morally superior."

You can short cut it for their cliche filled heads "As long as the morals you follow stay superior to your current thinking".

Privacy has always been a pipe dream, digital privacy a fantasy.

Maybe decentralized digital world would work
