all of latin america from the rio grande to the patagonia in argentina has this tradition. mexico was NOT the first country that the spanish settled and conquered during the 1500's onwards. the caribbean islands of cuba, hispaniola and puerto rico were discovered first and thus had these traditions first and foremost before the mexicans.
