True. I have welded many full tanks on diesel trucks.
I would never try on a gasoline tank though unless it was 80 below.

No. That is the worst thing to do. The trick is to fill it up with gas completely. Guys in my high school welding class would fix their tanks with mig welders while still on the truck. Just had to fill it up first. Liquid gasoline has a hard time catching on fire. Fumes however...

With out oxygen it should not burn. What they did was first plug the hole in the tank with a little epoxy putty to stop the dripping. Then fill the tank completely. Then wipe the area clean of all surface fuel. Then weld a plate over the hole with the mig welder but not just doing a full weld all at once. Weld a short bit then wait to cool down. Petrol is a hydrocarbon, which means it is made up of hydrogen and carbon atoms. In order to burn, it needs oxygen as a reactant. Without oxygen, petrol cannot be ignited and will not burn. You are as ignorant as a nigger faggot.

Empty the gas tank, then fill it with water before working on it.

Empty gas tanks are the most susceptible to fuel-air-explosions.

Water would act as a heat sink in his case.

I've done it on aluminum diesel tanks but i had a vacuum on the fill port to create a negative pressure in the reservoir & was using a mig welder. Shitty setup but some situations call for it.

There's no ''gas tank repair'' certification as far as I'm concerned, although there is a cert for making brand new gas & fuel tanks. Thanks Underwriter Lab jews!

Most won't touch it with a 10' pole because they're deadly afraid of it... being a specialist at this simply means you know how to manage flammable fumes in a vessel.

Had my motorcycle gas tank welded and from what I remember they said it had to be done under water or something. It was sent to a guy who specialized in that sort of thing

Sounds like bullshit to charge way more than can be justified.

I welded a 1 1/2 x 2 patch & a stiffner on the bottom of a Honda tank from the mid 80s and I simply purged it with argon. It welded like crap because of the contaminants inside seeping into the weld but it's to be expected with decades of varnish in there.

Took about 45mins to purge, weld & finish it.

It was being paid for by insurance so probably lol. That little patch definitely doesn't look beautiful but given the circumstances I think that turned out pretty well. It's on the bottom anyhow.

An Italian did something similar down the street from where I live. His car's gas tank was presumably leaking so he just positioned himself underneath it with a blowtorch and did what you just saw. In this case, he was surprisingly not killed.

Large aircraft tanks are ventilated with warm forced air for a few days before people go inside. I think it would be safe enough to vigorously purge with water a few times to remove trapped pools of fuel, then run air through it from a shop vac exhaust a few times over a day or so. If that still explodes at least it would be a redneck explosion instead of a spic one.

That's a heating tip, not a cutting accessory, which is what you want when working with lead or tin on a big surface.

The tank was probably empty of liquid but obviously not purged with argon, although helium would've served him better in that position.
