My uncle worked for the forest service in Oregon for his entire career. The real issue, according to him, is that any time the forest service tries to actually manage the forest properly ( like install fire breaks), the environmentalists would protest and sue so they couldn't proceed.

That's an issue in Australia here. We might see some magnificent fires this summer, especially after all the rain we've had.
