I want to talk about my dog. I made a huge mistake adopting a German shepherd. Let me explain.

submitted by Portmanure to dogs 10 monthsJul 5, 2023 13:26:24 ago (+30/-2)     (dogs)

I love her so much, she is gods gift to this green earth. A German shepherd is a highly intelligent, highly energetic, involved doggy. She sees and notices everything. Everything! My American bullie bulldog died from cancer recently I only got 7 years with her, she was fantastic. I miss her so much, she was strong, calm, confident and a pleasure to have around. When she died I was heart broken. It took a year and a half but I decided to get another dog. I saw an ad from some guy selling Shephards. I’m not paying big bucks for pure breeds. They die from cancer. He wanted $800 for a puppy. I offered $400 why not? He accepted and I bought her. The last of a brood from a ranch in Modesto.. she was supposed to be 3 months old, but after I read the paperwork for her shots I realized she was only 8 weeks old. Too soon to leave her mother. German shepherd are born big, it’s hard to tell how old they are. I also discovered she was covered in ticks and had a mange. Dang it! My house has been a wreck since I brought her home. She chews everything, if she is bored and doesn’t have my attention say goodbye to leather boots. Her prey instinct is strong, she chases everything that moves. Also, if she can’t get to something, she will will think about it and figure out a way to get it. Smart as all hell. She solves problems (her problems, not mine.) I finally accepted the situation. Built a brick pad on the edge of my yard. Put a couple Adirondack chairs on it, a shade and I sit there. Smoking a pipe, sipping whiskey while throwing a ball for Daisy. Yes I named her daisy. She’s a black German shepherd with tan legs. Straight back, she stands 24 inches at the shoulder and hind. Lanky and lean at 66 pounds. She does not look like a typical German shepherd. She has a distinct wolf stance with her long front legs. I wouldn’t trade her for the world. Note: if you are retiring and want to relax do not get a German shepherd!

8 weeks is the perfect age. Honestly, I think your issue is that you were unprepared for a working line dog.

I have one. Its significantly more rewarding than owning a lazy mutt.

I suggest you buy a dvd: Michael Ellis the power of training your dog with food.

I think you nailed it. I was totally unprepared for a dog with this kind of energy. I was expecting a lazy hound dog but got a hyper aware active dog. I’m adjusting and learning that a bored dog is a bad dog and it’s my fault. I’m getting really good at keeping her entertained, it’s been fun too.

Also, she was house trained after just two days. I never smacked her or hit her ever. I just yelled no when I caught her in the act and scooted her outside. She caught on quick when she realized she had options.

I’m finding that out the hard way. She is destructive and if I were a stranger and peaked over my fence and saw Daisy I would nope the fuck out of there.

I have been training her. I use the choke collar, I don’t choke her with it, I just snap it to get her attention. However, I’ve run into a huge problem. She perceives any other dog as a threat. I don’t know why but it’s not only embarrassing but I can’t control her when it happens. For now, when it happens I suspend her from her choke collar so she can’t dig her paws in and charge the other dog. I tell her no, and hold her back. I apologize to the people walking their little fluffy. But daisy is unresponsive when it happens. I think it might take another level of violence to get through to her. I really don’t want to do that, I know there is no such thing as a bad dog, just bad owners. Damn it!

Maybe a shock collar, jut once or twice. She sounds smart enough to get a clue pretty quickly.

I'm sure she thinks she is defending you or something, so that's tough.

[ - ] Portmanure [op] 3 points 10 monthsJul 5, 2023 17:38:00 ago (+3/-0)

Not a fan of shock collars. I’ve never owned one or even considered one. I just see them as cruel, when with a little patience I can achieve the same results.

[ - ] JudyStroyer 4 points 10 monthsJul 5, 2023 17:59:19 ago (+4/-0)*

Hey dude, get a shock collar. I thought the same you did, but they have a beep, a vibrate, and the shock feature is there if you need it. You likely wont. They respond well to the beep and the vibration. You wont be disappointed. Never ever let them see the remote. I have shepherds. When she is 2, you will say to her "you are the best dog imaginable" and you'll be right.

Edited for typos

Excellent! I have never used one, either.

But I would if I were that retarded bitch who comes around from time to time with her retarded constantly yapping and aggressive stupid fucking chihuahuas. If I were her, I'd use it on herself for being such an idiotic ugly stupid bitch who just lets her tiny ugly retard "dogs" shit everywhere and do whatever they want.

When it comes to big intelligent dogs, I'd kind of assume it's a bit too much as well, but maybe just once or twice in egregious circumstances, I guess. But not on my dog, and not, apparently, on your dog either.

Our dog was already a bit on in years when we got her and I was pleasantly surprised to find that she pretty much just follows commands [when she feels like it and it is convenient, generally... but she can tell when I REALLY mean something, I guess by tone, and then she cuts the BS right away]. She's like half hounddog and half beagle: maximum attitude and an astonishing capacity for laziness. But somehow her bark and snarl sound very much like a German shepherd and she can chase off all raccoons and most niggers.

Let me explain further about my hesitation. A long time ago in a galaxy far far away I was out on a long mission. When I came home I found a strange dog in my backyard. When I approached it, it rolled over and peed on itself. This dog was messed up. Turns out my sister had kidnapped an abused dog that was tied up in a yard, not being fed and had no water. She stole it, put in my backyard because I owned a house. It was a German shepherd Rottweiler mix. Abused, tortured and terrified. Being human I couldn’t abandon the little puppy. So I took care of her. It was when I was walking her that I learned this dog is fucking insane. Whenever we encountered another dog, she would attack like her life depended on it. When I say attack, I’m talking Japanese imperial army banzai attack. There was no stopping her. Totally and utterly insane. I had no idea what to do. Just by luck I had contacted a local Rottweiler breeder and trainer. Who evaluated my dog and said she needed to be put down, right now. Your dog is insane. Being an idiot, I said really? Is there no other option? She gave me one option, if I train her and it’s not going to be easy, she would walk me through the steps but if it doesn’t work she had the right to destroy my dog. I accepted. It was brutal. I never ever want to do that again. But it worked. She turned out to be a super well trained sweetheart of a dog. My heart still hurts when I think of her. A fantastic dog. But the path was awful. I had the police arrest me because I was swinging a German shepherd/Rottweiler mix through the air and slamming her down hard on the pavement. Trying to keep her from killing another dog out for a walk. They called the police on me. I was released when I convinced the cops to call my dog trainer. They knew her because she trained K9s for their department. She explained the situation. I hated every moment that I had to hurt that dog. But in the end, what a lovable sweetheart she turned out to be, sure I saved her life but the trauma it caused me still won’t go away to this day. I’m hesitant to do this again with Daisy.

Edit: I hate choke collars to this day, there has to be a better way. Every dog I’ve had since then I’ve trained with patience and kindness. Daisy is going to need a stronger hand. I’m gunshy

Let me tell you the high points of this wonderful dog. Her name was Sheba. I didn’t name her. She was so well trained I could run her through all her commands with just hand signals. I could put a piece of steak in her mouth and take it out. She would not eat unless I said okay. She would bark on command and stop on command. When I had guests over for dinner she would sit quietly and never beg for food. It unnerved them, so I would let them take a piece of food off their plate and give it to her. She liked that and did it in a well behaved manner. I never ever worried about “undoing” her training. She wasn’t allowed on my bed (I should have allowed it, but I didn’t know at that time.) I would wake in the morning to this big wet nose near my face. It was wonderful. One time I was babysitting my neighbors kitten. While they were out of town. I was standing at the door talking to a friend when Sheba walked by, my friend said was is that? I looked down and saw two kitten feet sticking out of my dogs mouth. Oh my god! I grabbed her and yelled open! The kitty dropped out and ran behind the fridge. I was able to check the kitten out when it came walking from behind the fridge covered in dog slobber but perfectly fine. It grew in to a large orange tabby that snuggled with my dog all the time. Crazy I know,

She was born January 16 2022. So a year and half. She just left her zoom zoom phase. I call it that because up and till recently she would have these sudden bursts of energy and run through the entire house, zooming from room to room. Amazing, and I had no idea why. I have a friend with a German shepherd and he described this behavior and called it the zoom zoom phase.

I didn't want to use one either, bought it turned it on high and shocked myself. It will get your attention, but it is not painful. I had to use it once, Olive, a Kangal Shepherd Dog, now is on alert, but not violent while walking.

Check out the Gentle leader leashes. They help to re-direct their attention using their own forward motion. My brother used one for his Aussie-German Shepherd mix.

you choke her? I wish I knew where you lived I'd choke you, you ignorant cruel pos. You're too stupid to have a dog that's obviously beyond your ability. Give her to a family that has half a brain and compassion.

[ - ] Portmanure [op] 3 points 10 monthsJul 5, 2023 17:36:30 ago (+3/-0)

You are mistaken, I never choked her. But I did use a choke collar. They have a unique snap when done right you can get a dog’s attention without hurting them.

[ - ] Cpt_Dirt 3 points 10 monthsJul 5, 2023 17:30:58 ago (+3/-0)

I'll second the "without guidance" part.
They're working dogs and need a job. The get neurotic without one and that's when the bad behaviors come out.
Keep 'em busy

[ - ] Portmanure [op] 3 points 10 monthsJul 5, 2023 17:46:18 ago (+3/-0)

I do my best to keep her busy. I learned recently by circumstance dogs love routines. They want the same thing at the same time everyday. I’ve put that into full effect. Daisy loves it!

[ - ] Terminalelektroshock -4 points 10 monthsJul 5, 2023 17:15:25 ago (+1/-5)

You moron you don't starve an animal to keep them obeying. Then they will eat everything and anything. You reward and animal with treats sure but also with positive reinforcement and love. German Shepherds are not dangerous or destructive- I've had purebred shepherds since the '50's so I know the breed inside out. You raise a smart dog the same way you raise a toddler. Love kindness, patience mixed with intelligent discipline.

[ - ] Portmanure [op] 3 points 10 monthsJul 5, 2023 17:42:22 ago (+3/-0)

While I won’t deny that I’m a moron, (thanks for reminding me, dad.) I never starved a dog to keep them obeying. Where did you get that idea? A good dog will only eat the food I provide. This keeps them safe from people who hate dogs like you I think. A well trained dog will only eat food provided by their handlers. So they don’t fall victim to that movie trope of feeding Guard dogs steak.

Thanks, I had second thoughts when she chewed through the usb cable for my very expensive flight sim rudder pedals. I was able to order an expensive replacement from the manufacturer. But oh my god! Why that cable?

[ - ] PotatoWhisperer2 3 points 10 monthsJul 5, 2023 15:53:48 ago (+3/-0)

Learn to splice cables together, it'll save you a lot over the years.

[ - ] Portmanure [op] 3 points 10 monthsJul 5, 2023 16:43:07 ago (+3/-0)

Power cables are an easy splice. Data cables not so much.

[ - ] Artificial_Intelligentile 5 points 10 monthsJul 5, 2023 14:24:02 ago (+5/-0)

dont make her run too much, german shepherds are known for having problems with their hips early on. buy more chew toys if you want to keep her busy.

perfectly healthy shepherds sometimes need to be put down, only because walking causes them great pain... you dont want your dog to suffer through this... get some beef bones with marrow to feed to her. shell be happy all day.

[ - ] Portmanure [op] 4 points 10 monthsJul 5, 2023 14:38:55 ago (+4/-0)

I keep a fresh bowl of water next to my chair but you’re correct. She will run and chase after the ball all day long and won’t stop. No matter the temperature so I watch her closely and stop for her sake. Let her recover and then head back out to the yard for some more throws.

[ - ] KeepPoal4fags 4 points 10 monthsJul 5, 2023 15:21:08 ago (+4/-0)

+6 gorillion on the bones with marrow, butchers sell them cheap. Dogs are crazy for them and big rewards for good behavior go a long way with pups.

[ - ] lord_nougat 3 points 10 monthsJul 5, 2023 16:07:18 ago (+3/-0)

German shepherds eat those up like potato chips! Crunch crunch!

[ - ] KeepPoal4fags 3 points 10 monthsJul 5, 2023 16:18:29 ago (+3/-0)

Takes my dogs quite a while to finish them, and they burry about a 3rd of them to properly ripen🤢

[ - ] JudyStroyer 1 point 10 monthsJul 6, 2023 02:00:05 ago (+1/-0)

Will confirm, my sheps love the large bones, they will gnaw on them till they are 1/8 their original size. They dont chew anything other than their own toys, or their bones...will pick up an occasional shoe and drop it in a random place, unharmed. I swear they are just fucking with us. We get rid of the bones eventually once you kick them in the dark after any carteledge(sp?) is gone and it turns into a night-time booby trap for your toes.

[ - ] observation1 5 points 10 monthsJul 5, 2023 14:03:58 ago (+5/-0)

A tired dog is a happy dog.

I was at wits end with mine which was 6 weeks when we brought her home. Just when I couldn't take it any more we'd have a breakthrough.

Try mixing hot sauce with flour and coating it on places.

Try to give them a toy any time they get mouthy with anything.

[ - ] Portmanure [op] 3 points 10 monthsJul 5, 2023 14:19:05 ago (+3/-0)

I keep a bucket of balls next to my chair. I can’t let more than one ball fly into the yard at a time. Otherwise we get what I call the two ball problem. She loves her ball but can only fit one in her mouth at a time. When she comes across a second ball, that’s when the problem starts. She wants both, she’ll drop one and pick up the other, then drop it to get the other, so on and so forth. It’s funny to watch.

[ - ] Portmanure [op] 3 points 10 monthsJul 5, 2023 14:31:42 ago (+3/-0)

Also, you don’t need to spend much on dog toys. She likes squeeky balls but by far her favorite is a simple soft ball. It’s the perfect size and she loves sinking her teeth into the leather skin. I know this because she will always select it out of the bucket of balls. I’ve watched her put other balls back in the bucket to select the softball. She will eventually skin it, and chew down the core. I get her another and she forgets about the old skinned softball. But I have to be careful to throw the old one away when she’s not looking. She will destroy the garbage can if she thinks her favorite ball is in there. Yeah she’s that smart.

[ - ] bonghits4jeebus 1 point 10 monthsJul 5, 2023 22:02:47 ago (+1/-0)

I got a goldendoodle and at 3 if she doesn't get 45 minutes of hard exercise every day, she is a PITA. That includes days when all the dogs are laying about because it's hot or wet or whatever...

I am not a perfect dog owner, but I at least run her around the backyard several times a day. I learned that walks are nice, but they don't tire out my dog unless you really have time to go for 1+ hours. So we do a walk, but we also have to do some exercise. It's exercise for me too. Though not my only exercise. It can be difficult to find time.

[ - ] IdlyDyiny 3 points 10 monthsJul 5, 2023 17:16:08 ago (+3/-0)

I love going to get my boots and only one is there. Now I just asl my dog where she put it and she looks in the general direction, saves alot of time.

[ - ] Portmanure [op] 3 points 10 monthsJul 5, 2023 17:25:22 ago (+3/-0)

We’ve learned this too. I warn my wife if you let Daisy out with an empty mouth your garden shoes are going to walk. If she runs outside with her ball already in her mouth no worries. Unfortunately if you ask Daisy we’re the shoe is, she sees it as an opportunity to be chased. She loves to be chased. Your shoe plus daisy equals CHASE!

[ - ] Cpt_Dirt 2 points 10 monthsJul 5, 2023 17:29:14 ago (+2/-0)

I had one that made it to 14. Literally the best dog I've ever been around. No contest.

[ - ] Portmanure [op] 2 points 10 monthsJul 5, 2023 17:51:52 ago (+2/-0)

If Daisy makes it past 10 I will be thankful. I exercise her, feed her right, do my best to keep her healthy. But most importantly she seems happy and that is all that matters.

[ - ] Portmanure [op] 2 points 10 monthsJul 5, 2023 17:53:31 ago (+2/-0)

Except for the vacuum cleaner, it terrifies her. I have no idea why. Must be some sound from the motor.

[ - ] yesiknow 2 points 10 monthsJul 5, 2023 15:03:31 ago (+4/-2)

You're first problem is saying you adopted her.

She is a dog, not a person. Do not ever confuse the two. You are her master, not her daddy.

You can get a kick scooter and set up a pull lead

[ - ] Portmanure [op] 3 points 10 monthsJul 5, 2023 15:24:30 ago (+3/-0)

I do tend to be Anthropomorphic about her, in the end she is just a dog. I was caught off guard by how rough and tumble she really is. She is not a cuddly sweet dog, she loves a good fight. She won’t hesitate to hurdle her entire 66 pounds of bone and muscle at a target. However, in the evening after the day is done she will quietly sidle up to me and curl up. I can’t help myself but I’ll reach out and scratch her between those huge radar dish ears and I can see her relax with pleasure from my scratches, until the cat moves thinking the dog is asleep, she’s up in a flash and after the cat. That’s my princess Daisy.

[ - ] Terminalelektroshock -3 points 10 monthsJul 5, 2023 17:20:13 ago (+0/-3)

Feed her you stupid moron and teach her not to chase the cat because once she catches it she'll kill it. you're dumb as fuck.

[ - ] Portmanure [op] 4 points 10 monthsJul 5, 2023 17:27:03 ago (+4/-0)

She’s caught the cat several times. More than I can count. The cat is in on it. It’s not dead yet. You don’t know Daisy. And yes, I are dumb. So far so gud!

I have a couple cats, if she’s not chasing them she’s protecting them. She catches the Tom every once in awhile but doesn’t hurt him. I’ve noticed lately they’re in some kind of dog chase cat game. Noisy and a bit scary if you didn’t know them. It’s harmless in the end.

They calm down. Best thing to do is take them to the park and run her (play fetch) for 20-30 mins. After that you can walk them without a leash.

[ - ] KyleIsThisTall 0 points 10 monthsJul 5, 2023 22:37:56 ago (+0/-0)

You need an insulated doghouse outside with a windguard entrance. Shepherds are great outside or basement dogs. Don't let them in the human part of the house.

[ - ] Portmanure [op] 0 points 10 monthsJul 6, 2023 11:39:03 ago (+0/-0)

I had subscribed to that philosophy at one time. But I realized I’m not training guard dogs. I’m training companion dogs. There is a huge difference. Training a guard dog is cruel. But necessary for an effective guard dog. A pet dog, requires a much lower level of discipline. But discipline is necessary, the larger the dog the stricter the discipline.

Dogs don’t know from right or wrong. I have an East German working dog. The fiercest. On paper. She’s kind of scary. Puts up a huge bluster when she’s scared. When her dander is up she looks a lot larger than she really is. Which brings up an interesting thing. I have severely misjudged her. My vet asked me about her for her first appointment. They asked me the size. I said medium, you know a mid sized dog. When I took her in, they were shocked. She’s a beast huge that’s not a medium size dog. I was confused, she is just the little puppy I brought home long ago. I still don’t see it. She’s a medium size dog.

My dogs cold nose reminds me to put underwear on immediately. Eek! If you have a dog you know what I’m talking about.

Buy her some cats. They’ll make good hunting material for her.

She’s got two cats. Jasper is the male and taunts her often. He’s been caught a lot. They have a weird agreement. Peaches is our female cat and wants nothing to do with Daisy. Daisy wants her so bad. So far, not happening. She’s a fast cat!

She's not purebred and you're probably starving her. Feed the poor dog and get her spayed so she'll calm down. Purebred shepherds are one of the most intelligent of breeds; why do you think they work with the armed forces and police forces?
Buy her big knuckle bones and either cook them (boil) or give them to her raw so she has something to chew on. Get off your lazy drunken ass and take her for walks and run her.

She’s well fed and I bribe her with snacks. I have some treats that I put in a hollow bone for her. It’s a challenge that keeps her entertained. She is definitely not starving. But I use the standard for gauging dog hunger. You should be able to just barely make out one rib on the rib cage. Not seeing a rib is okay but be careful that could be a fat dog. Seeing two ribs is also bad. That’s a hungry dog. Dogs have a long history of being hunters and being hungry is the normal.
