Let’s talk rifles.

submitted by Portmanure to Guns 1.8 yearsJul 5, 2023 01:45:29 ago (+4/-0)     (Guns)

I have four. A Ruger Mini 14 ranch, two AR-15s (one is configured as an M-4 the other is a Vietnam era M-16 with carry handle.) The last and bestest is an AR-10. It’s bad ass and LOUD! Very accurate and deals a lot of damage. I could safely hunt elk with this gun. My favorite by far is the mini 14. The wood stock, the smoothness of firing it. It’s just an all around good gun. Easy to clean and maintain. I love my ARs but the mini is a pleasure to carry and shoot.

I’m shopping for a bolt action rifle. I don’t know what to choose. I like to shoot, the bigger the better but I’m not a hunter, can be if I need to, but I like perfectly round holes on paper. I want a bolt action so I can place those round holes as far away as possible. Advice?

My buddy has one, the Ruger chassis gun. Fucking awesome, but the ammo is like $8 a round!

Wow. I didn't know they were that expansive.

But truth be told. If you're gonna teach out past 1/2 mile, you really do need to be loading your own. I don't know how much that will save, but it will save some.

I'd love to, but I lost all mine in a tragic cable car accident.

The one in the mountains, just as it passed over the lake?

Same.

How experienced are you, how young were you when you first started shooting, do you shoot long distance regularly or just once in a while (anything over 500yrds, 1,000yrds frequently?...assuming that you want to punch cloverleafs at 1,200 yards the Browning A-Bolt M-1000 Eclipse: laminate thumbhole stock, bolt action, drop floor with 1x detachable magazine, heavy barrel and most of all equipped with a "Ballistic Optimizer Shooting System, or B.O.S.S.", a vibration damper for short...forget about the 6.5 Creedmoor unless you're going for mile long shots...mount a Bushnell Elite Tactical 3.5-21x50 DMR3 Scope and a Warne Skyline Precision Bipod and you've got a serious plinker...loading your own ammo is a must if you want to get serious....shooting factory ammo is half-ass...your next option is a .177 caliber Daisy pellet gun.

I used to sling a rifle on my back and walk a long distance. But those days are over. I’d rather drive out to a remote location. Setup a target. Sit at my table with my rifle, under a shade, shoot. Look through a spotting scope to see how I did.

...holy fuck OP, that's one hell of a visual that you just painted there, almost Rockwell status, if that's what you want to do then go with the .270WSM, if you want less bark and are happy with 500 - 600 yrd shooting go with a Savage X-bolt 22-250 with laminate stock and thumb hole with bipod.

Inside of 200 yards a 45-70 is a bunch of fun. You might leave the range with a mild concussion.

Whatever you get, don't get another gun that shoots 5.56.
You have a rifle for .308/7.62x51 which is good for hunting and defense against lightly armored belligerents, so naturally step it up and get something that works against heavy body armor. The highest rated body armors are typically only rated to stop AP 30-06, so whatever bolt action you get just needs to be a bit more powerful than that while being at the same caliber. Alternatively get something of a larger caliber and significant more energy, the larger the caliber the more energy you'll need to penetrate level 4 body armor.

The choice is yours, I'm not going to do your research for you, but I probably would get a light elephant rifle.

I was thinking about going into the grizzly bear range like a .300 Weatherby but I want off the shelf bullets. I’m not a reloader so I would like to be able to go down to my local gun store and find a box of rounds on the shelf. Nothing exotic or rare.

Food for thought, thanks. I don’t know if I want to go to that level of involvement. It’s a hobby to me. Nothing more.

@BushChuck...exactly, every caliber I own has proprietary loads of my own formula.

Not true if you buy quality ammo.

I haven't seen 300 win-mag discussed. As far as I know, those are big rounds and would be a big step up. I don't own one but I have seen them recommended for elk/moose/bear - at a distance which is what you are looking for.

30-378 Weatherby Magnum, and .300 Remington Ultra Magnum are as commonly available as .300 Weatherby, all of them are sold in mainstream stores like Sportsman's Warehouse.

After looking around it looks like most calibers > .4 inches with energies at or exceeding 5,000 foot pounds of force, are not sold in mainstream stores, despite the stores selling .50 BMG.
Your only option if you don't want to reload, but want a larger caliber, is to hit up the local gun clubs and see if anyone is willing to reload for you.

Damn, well I have my answer. And it’s not simple. Thanks for helping me flesh it out. I’ll do some more research. I’ll settle on something. I have a local sportsman’s warehouse and my Military Exchange (yes they sell guns in the people’s republic.) I’ll look on the shelf and see what they sell. The bolt action carousel at my local military Exchange has several bolt action rifles but they are all chambered in 6.5 creedmoor I’m not familiar with that caliber.

[ - ] FreeinTX 3 points 1.8 yearsJul 5, 2023 06:50:53 ago (+3/-0)

6.5 is similar to .308 but with a flatter arc, so you'll likely be more accurate. But if you already have a .308 in semi and you're looking for a further range for your bolt action rifle, there are far better rounds.

On the rifle, you just want a 700 Remington platform. It's the AR of the bolt action world. And you'll be spending most of your money on the optic to see out to about a mile with precision.

[ - ] MaryXmas 3 points 1.8 yearsJul 5, 2023 12:51:08 ago (+3/-0)

I was going to say this. Optic becomes almost nore important than the firearm.

[ - ] s23erdctfvyg 0 points 1.8 yearsJul 5, 2023 03:17:46 ago (+0/-0)

Energy and caliber wise, it's in between 223/5.56x45 and 308/7.62x51.
If you're unfamiliar with a round, look it up, Wikipedia usually has accurate ballistic information on the round.

I found the creedmore in the deer range, perhaps a .338 will fall in the big gun range. I never plan to hunt elephants. I just want that long range reach out and tickle a piece of paper.

[ - ] TheOriginal1Icemonkey 0 points 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 21:29:57 ago (+0/-0)

6.5 Creedmore will reach out plenty far, well over 1000yds, and at only $1.30 a round compared to $8 a rd for 338.

I’m not even a good shot, I’m just imagining how good I could be. With practice. I can put my 5.56 on the black rings. But I have to try really hard. I’ll never be able to pop a Kennedy in a convoy. I’m a good shot though.

[ - ] Portmanure [op] 0 points 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 21:42:58 ago (+0/-0)

Only Hillary can kill a Kennedy without firing a shot. Just saying…

Mosin-Nagaunt-? spelling? This rifle was featured in the movie"Enemy at the Gates"
the rifle will shoot dead-flat for an easy 1800mtrs.

Hey, why don't you come in out of the 20th century. You'll catch a death of a cold out there.

[ - ] MaryXmas 0 points 1.8 yearsJul 5, 2023 12:43:55 ago (+0/-0)

Is this a joke?

[ - ] Reader 0 points 1.8 yearsJul 5, 2023 13:27:41 ago (+0/-0)

This thread is pretty well covered, but I would like to submit the Bergara B-14 HMR for consideration. Choose your caliber, I like 6.5. The gun is ready to go at about $1000, and you will only need to add glass. The barrel, action, stock and trigger are all best in price range, no bullshit. Great bolt gun, and my most accurate out of a lot.

[ - ] TheOriginal1Icemonkey 0 points 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 20:48:45 ago (+0/-0)

Can’t help you much with the bolt gun question, but I too am a fan of the mini14. Check out this site for trigger work: https://www.mini14triggers.com/
I sent my group in for the “advanced” job, the third one down. 14s is all these guys do and I couldn’t be happier. Well worth it.
