The ancestors of modern Russians are the Slavic tribes, whose original home is thought by some scholars to have been the wooded areas of the Pinsk Marshes, one of the largest wetlands in Europe.[55] The East Slavs gradually settled Western Russia in two waves: one moving from Kiev toward present-day Suzdal and Murom and another from Polotsk toward Novgorod and Rostov.[56] From the 7th century onwards, the East Slavs constituted the bulk of the population in western Russia,[56] and, according to some scholars, slowly but peacefully assimilated the native Finnic peoples, including the Merya,[57] the Muromians,[58] and the Meshchera.[59]
Outside archaeological remains, little is known about the predecessors to Russians in general prior to 859 AD, when the Primary Chronicle starts its records.[60] By 600 AD, the Slavs are believed to have split linguistically into southern, western, and eastern branches.[citation needed]
Rus, also spelled Ros, ancient people who gave their name to the lands of Russia and Belarus. Their origin and identity are much in dispute. Traditional Western scholars believe them to be Scandinavian Vikings, an offshoot of the Varangians, who moved southward from the Baltic coast and founded the first consolidated state among the eastern Slavs, centring on Kiev. Russian scholars, along with some Westerners, consider the Rus to be a southeastern Slavic tribe that founded a tribal league; the Kievan state, they affirm, was the creation of Slavs and was attacked and held only briefly by Varangians.

Follow archaeologists as they look for evidence to support the Normanist Theory of Viking originSee all videos for this article The Viking, or “Normanist,” theory was initiated in the 18th century by such German historian-philologists as Gottlieb Siegfried Bayer (1694–1738) and August Ludwig von Schlözer (1735–1809); Bayer was an early member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences. These two relied on The Russian Primary Chronicle, an account written in the 12th century and covering the period 852 to 1110; it says that the Rus, a Norman people, were first asked to come to Novgorod by the local population to put an end to their feuds; the Rus later extended their rule to Kiev, making it their keystone of defense. This theory was advanced in the 19th century by the Danish philologist Vilhelm Thomsen (1842–1927) and the German-Russian historian-philologist Ernst Eduard Kunik (1814–99). It was noted that early Arabian writers had represented the seat of Rus as an island covered with woods and marshes; excavations of 9th- and 10th-century tumuli confirmed the presence of Norse warriors in such a region around Lake Ilmen, near the ancient town of Novgorod, and Lake Ladoga, where the Neva River has its origin. These Baltic regions seemed to indicate the origin of the Rus.
Russia: Prehistory and the rise of the Rus
Russian scholars have rejected The Russian Primary Chronicle as unreliable and have insisted that the eastern Slavs, before the entry of the Varangians, had evolved a sophisticated feudal state comparable to the Carolingian empire in the West. The Rus were simply a southern Slavic tribe living on the Ros River.
The first known people to set foot on Russian territory were called the Cimmerians. They ruled between 1000 and 700 BCE and were followed by the Scythians in 700 BCE.
The Scythian nomads established a military state and defeated the Persians, but were nonetheless conquered by the Sarmatians in 3 BCE. During the Sarmatian reign, Greek settlers colonized the coast of the Black Sea. Sarmatians and Greeks maintained friendly trade based relations until the German Goths interfered in 200 A.D. The Goths in turn were defeated by the Huns in 370 A.D., which paved the way for Bulgaric and Slavic settlement during the time of the European Migration Period. In the 7th century, a new force came to power in Southern Russia: the Khazars. They gave up the nomadic lifestyle, built towns and established trading connections. Everyone living in the Khazar state was allowed to practice whatever religion they believed in without restrictions. Finally, the Eastern Slavs appeared — the founders of the modern Russian state. By 900, their economy, society and culture where thriving. Yet it wasn’t until the 16th century that the Eastern Slavs crossed the Urals and began settling in Siberia.
