Google likes to "scrape" (copy) a paragraph or two from certain sites (often news sites) and include it on their search result pages. This keeps users in the "google ecosystem" instead of going to another website. I've always considered it a very scummy practice...
But when the people complaining (govt news) - and the perpetrators themselves (google) - are both literal propagandist control freaks, it will be entertaining to see who can out-fascist each other.
The news orgs and google are jewing about money made from media, google doesn't want to pay for including canadian news sites in search results and scraping some of the text from articles.
It would set a precedent of other countries enacting similar collective bargaining laws over the revenue google makes from those sites, they stand to lose more than what canadian news are worth.
