Continuity of Voat

submitted by Plebbitor to TalkDev 10 monthsJun 26, 2023 15:36:58 ago (+6/-5)     (TalkDev)

The various incarnations of Voat since its demise have helped keep the spirit of the community alive.
There is a new project underway which aims to be a sturdier vessel for Free Speech on Reddit like platforms: Plebbit.

If you are developing for Voat / Talk.lol, you no doubt care about the community here. If you have time, and some skills in e.g. IPFS, or React JS, please take a look at Plebbit.

One thing that is needed at the moment is a way of speeding up the peer-to-peer aspect, so that posting is more rapid. Clients with a different GUI might be popular too.

Talk.lol is not Voat.

Thanks. I would like to know more about this. In what way is Talk.lol not Voat? Obviously, the original Voat is gone, but isn't Talk.lol one of the places where the Voat community regrouped?

User for two hours? Fuck off, we're full. We don't need you trying to scrape users from here, so fuck all the off.

I have actually been a user here as long as you. This is just a new account. Your sentiment is appreciated, though.

I have had a few accounts here, and on the platforms that led back to Voat.

Why not lemmy?

[ - ] beece 2 points 10 monthsJun 26, 2023 17:04:44 ago (+2/-0)

Lemmy hard codes what they consider "bad" words. Bad words like "Didnu" and "beaner" amongst others. From: https://linuxreviews.org/Lemmy

"A close-up inspection of lemmy_utils/src/lib.rs reveals that Lemmy has a interesting list of forbidden words hard-coded into the source code.

static ref SLUR_REGEX: Regex = RegexBuilder::new(r"(fag(g|got|tard)?|maricos?|cock\s?sucker(s|ing)?|\bn(i|1)g(\b|g?(a|er)?(s|z)?)\b|dindu(s?)|mudslime?s?|kikes?|mongoloids?|towel\sheads?|\bspi(c|k)s?\b|\bchinks?|niglets?|beaners?|\bnips?\b|\bcoons?\b|jungle\sbunn(y|ies?)|jigg?aboo?s?|\bpakis?\b|rag\s*heads?|gooks?|cunts?|bitch(es|ing|y)?|puss(y|ies?)|twats?|feminazis?|whor(es?|ing)|\bslut(s|t?y)?|\btr(a|@)nn?(y|ies?)|ladyboy(s?)|\b(b|re|r)tard(ed)?s?)").case_insensitive(true).build().unwrap();
The Lemmy developers have made it very clear that they see the banned words blacklist as a necessity."

Very gay.

The problem (which Plebbit overcomes) is centralization. With the centralization comes a host of other problems, like bottle-necks, choke-points, authoritarianism, etc.

The project name is stupid. It's like calling yourself a nigger.

Also, there are a lot of projects in this space. What makes yours different, other than Not Invented Here?

The name is a bit of a joke. It is a portmanteau of Plebian and Reddit and is a jibe at the NPCs on Reddit.

It is a Free Software platform, which is essential for a communications protocol. Plebbit is a protocol and a platform for the protocol (the client/web-interfaces). It suffers neither from centralization, like Talk.lol or Reddit, nor from Decentralization, like Lemmy, where de-Federation is used to censor people. Plebbit is distributed, so anybody who runs the client is supporting the network. Plebbit is strong against Sybil attacks, as it has a challenge for posting. Plebbit does not require infrastructure beyond the clients which people would run themselves, and a name system, currently ENS (Ether Name System). The name system is not hard-coded, and if a better choice becomes available, Plebbit could switch to it. Because of features like these, Plebbit can make Free Speech survivable over the longer term on the internet. That is why I recommend you take a look.

Promote your stupid site somewhere else

[ - ] Plebbitor [op] 0 points 10 monthsJun 27, 2023 17:57:54 ago (+0/-0)

Plebbit is a protocol, though there are websites for interacting with the protocol. There is also a Plebbit client.

Goats will be happy to hear about Plebbit and what it can do.

I did try the web version of this and it seems pretty damn good!

[ - ] Plebbitor [op] 0 points 10 monthsJun 26, 2023 15:52:54 ago (+1/-1)

There are already two web versions, one like Reddit, another more like 4Chan. Another is in the works, Seedit.

It does work, but quite often one needs to redo the post. Once you have been posting on there a bit, the mod for the board will likely remove the need for you to pass CAPTCHAs for actions.
