Quit smoking weed- nightmares are back

submitted by StealthNinjaTaliban to AskUpgoat 10 monthsJun 25, 2023 08:51:58 ago (+33/-0)     (AskUpgoat)

PTSD from the war. Been high for the last 20 years but recently decided that I wanted to do stop using drugs.

After a few weeks the weed cleared my system, the nightmares came back. Any suggestions?

Hi there. Just seeing how you've been doing with everything.

[ - ] StealthNinjaTaliban [op] 0 points 9 monthsJul 15, 2023 21:52:35 ago (+0/-0)

Much better! Still sober: no weed or alcohol. Physical therapy twice a day and a daily workout (albeit a light one). My goal is avoiding injury because it would end the exercise regiment.

So far, so good!! Thanks for checking in

This is the wrong website to be on if you have ptsd. Nothing but gore and anger here. Not smoking will bring some vivid dreams but you have to work on what else you might be filling and altering your mind with.

I've only recently noticed this. Weed suppresses dreams. When I haven't smoked in a good while I get very vivid dreams. Not usually nightmares though.

[ - ] gaperglory 7 points 10 monthsJun 25, 2023 10:54:56 ago (+7/-0)*

Nightmares are your mind processing stress and memories that your conscious mind doesnt have the bandwidth to. Nightmares, while awful, are healthy for your mind. They wont last forever. Also let this help you reflect on how marijuana has constipated your mental ability to process life.
I, myself, have been dealing with the worst nightmares of my life lately. They are god damn horrific. But everytime i wake up, im glad to be alive... Try to see the silver lining. A break from weed every now and then is good for you. Constant daily smoking CAN and WILL lead to depression that can only be treated by continual use.
Dont hate on me smokers, im one of you. Just speaking what I know to be true based on my personal exp, and that of EVERYONE ive ever talked to who also smoked daily for a long time.

Cannabis is a tool. A hammer is also a tool, ~243 people are murdered with hammers every year.

Tools are meant to be used responsibly. Used wrongly, all bets are off.

I have this issue. I started to lose the concept of reality with crazy vivid nightmares and just decided to start smoking again. It was tormenting.

Congratulations on giving up the drugs. It's hard to find people you can talk to about what you've been through. It's hard to find people who have resolved their issues. Most of the time you will find people with survivor's guilt, people who want to go back, or people trying to get disability who haven't seen or done anything. You are going to have to get creative and face this down. Find people who are willing to help without chemically castration you.

It's not co2 hallucinations. Weed severely inhibits the subconscious brains ability to communicate with the conscious. In short, the subconscious is pissed off that the conscious isn't listening, and you're smoking weed specifically to do that if you have PTSD. After 20 straight years, the subconscious probably has a lot to share.

Reading about the conscious and subconscious brains and how they work was one of the most interesting things I ever did. Brings a whole new understanding to the word 'me'.

dreams intensify for a few weeks after quitting

[ - ] blit416 2 points 10 monthsJun 25, 2023 11:55:32 ago (+2/-0)

what he ^ said. Dreams get intense, movie like, for several weeks after marijuana addiction cessation. i experienced the same thing. in some places (jails) they prescribe thc pills (avalon) for nightmares.
it will calm down. you might need another drug to help get off the dope if you can’t sleep because of the vivid picture show every time you close your eyes. don’t switch to booze.

[ - ] dosvydanya_freedomz 4 points 10 monthsJun 25, 2023 11:46:39 ago (+4/-0)

whatever you do, dont get on benzos. these are highly dangerous and yes go to a therapist and try to work it out by talking, talking and more talking

antidepressants will kill your thyroid too also it can make you feel numb just like your pot does.

again, look for pro help. dont go to a shrink go to a therapist. shrink will try to hook up with drugs for life. none of the drugs currently " on the market" really helps for depression. they just alleviate some of the symptoms

i know because i talk from experience.

[ - ] Sector7 4 points 10 monthsJun 25, 2023 10:43:43 ago (+5/-1)

I'm hearing a lot of positive results of microdosing mushrooms. Not getting high, just a very small amount. Some are saying the effects of a microdose on their depression or PTSD 'lasts' for up to several months. Might be worth looking into.

If you can get a referral through the VA to an outside therapist who does CBT or NLP, that may be worth checking out too. (avoid VA the rapists)

[ - ] heebiejeebies 5 points 10 monthsJun 25, 2023 14:24:35 ago (+5/-0)

Psilocybin and LSD both helped me to change my perspective and overcome years of suicidal depression. It was, however, a painful process because they brought on a full blown existential crisis wherein I found out that everything I believed about society and reality up to that point was an illusion. Started me on the journey towards truth that I'm still on today, so I'm forever thankful for these revelations.

I can't speak for anyone else because psychodelics affect everyone differently, but if you're experiencing mental blocks or hang ups that are negatively impacting your life, do some research into it. They may change your life for the better like they did mine!

[ - ] gaperglory 3 points 10 monthsJun 25, 2023 11:07:57 ago (+3/-0)

Be careful on microsdosing with shrooms. Ive seen many studies that seem to conclude that microdosing regularly can cause fungal lesions on the brain. That being said, these studies may be written by jews who dont want you to have a natural solution. Im just saying, tread likely and look into it. Also check the names of the publishers, looking for kikes.

[ - ] Rob3122 2 points 10 monthsJun 25, 2023 14:37:10 ago (+2/-0)

I remember seeing a youtube ad for some resort that does that bullshit. The guy in charge was a jew. I've seen people on that shit and I advise against doing it. One bad trip can ruin your life.

[ - ] parrygrin 3 points 10 monthsJun 25, 2023 12:28:33 ago (+3/-0)

For whatever it's worth, JBP cites research claiming the dose has to be enough to trigger a psychedelic experience.

[ - ] namefagsrgay 1 point 10 monthsJun 25, 2023 20:11:30 ago (+1/-0)

Mushrooms are essentially the opposite of weed. Mushrooms will constantly bubble up new ideas that you never would have thought of otherwise, it increases communication and spontaneity in the brain. Weed does the opposite, shutting down communication, which is why you have these intense dreams when your brain starts communicating normally again

[ - ] IdlyDyiny 3 points 10 monthsJun 25, 2023 15:48:03 ago (+3/-0)

I left another comment but fuck it. When I got sober for the first 4 years almost every night I'd wake up having bitten my tongue so hard it woke me up. My sleeping mind brought me back to the nightmares. Then I got a dog and I can't tell you how much that has helped regulate my mood. Not right away but I can tell you since a few weeks into getting her I haven't bit my tongue but one time. She's a godsend

Here are some tips for dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) nightmares if you’re a soldier or veteran: 1 - Talk about it: It can be difficult to talk about trauma and PTSD symptoms, but sharing your experiences with others who have been through similar situations can be extremely beneficial. You may find that they have experienced similar nightmares and understand what you’re going through. Consider joining a support group or talking with a therapist or mental health professional. 2 - Establish a sleep routine: Try to establish a regular bedtime routine every evening, such as winding down with calming activities like reading, listening to music, taking a warm bath, or practicing relaxation techniques before bed. This can help train your body to associate these cues with sleep rather than anxiety. 3 - Incorporate good sleep hygiene practices: Good sleep hygiene includes things like making sure your bedroom is cool, dark, and quiet; avoiding using electronic devices in bed; limiting caffeine and alcohol consumption; and not eating large meals right before bedtime. These habits can help improve overall sleep quality and reduce the likelihood of having nightmares. 4 - Use coping strategies: When you start to feel anxious or experience distress during the day, try to use coping skills such as deep breathing, positive self-talk, meditation, or grounding exercises. These techniques can also be useful to calm yourself down when you wake up from a nightmare. 5 - Keep track of triggers: Pay attention to any patterns in your nightmares and identify potential triggers that might be contributing to them. For example, loud noises, certain smells, or specific locations might trigger flashbacks or memories related to past trauma. Once you know what triggers your nightmares, you can begin to take steps to avoid those triggers and develop new ways to cope with them. 6 - Seek treatment: If your nightmares are severe or impacting your daily life, consider seeking professional treatment. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), exposure therapy, and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) are all effective evidence-based treatments for PTSD and can help you learn tools to manage your symptoms and regain control over your emotions.

If you find a solution then let me know. PTSD nightmares is one of the reasons that I smoke.

[ - ] gaperglory 1 point 10 monthsJun 25, 2023 11:04:06 ago (+1/-0)

I know this is going to sound jewy, but you might try hypnosis or alt therapy if you want to quit. If it works, and you dont want to quit, then dont. Its not coke... Aint gonna kill ya. My problem with consistent use is that it inevitably, in my case, leads to depression.
It causes the seratonin receptors to work overtime in the gut and the brain. So if you dont take it, you suffer from seratonin deficiency, much like someone who suddenly stops taking an SSRI. MJ is Gods SSRI...

[ - ] purityspiral 1 point 10 monthsJun 25, 2023 16:38:30 ago (+1/-0)

holy shit I need to supplement serotonin apparently.
I concur with your analysis, though I will have to test the connection.

I smoke to ease the anxiety and allows me to sleep without contemplating clown world (not healthy for me)
I read clown world book called beyond hypnosis once, the book is shit filled with lies about psychic powers and shit, but the process they outline for progressive relaxation (pre-self-hypnosis) just flat out works. It's still as an adult, the only way I can achieve a truly relaxed state without toking up, then I usually fall asleep

[ - ] GhostCow 0 points 10 monthsJun 25, 2023 11:18:26 ago (+2/-2)

I've never had that issue with quitting even after smoking every day for years

[ - ] beece 3 points 10 monthsJun 25, 2023 09:01:09 ago (+4/-1)

Brother, that's proud. Smoking weed is likely better than the chemicals the VA would give you. But you might check in with them and see if you can do a course of therapy. If it can bring the subconscious out of your body and into your head it might work for you. It has worked for some others. If you have to smoke it to clear the demons, as a minimum, you also might try edibles if they are available to you, at least you are not slowly tearing your lungs up.

[ - ] Whatthefuck 2 points 10 monthsJun 25, 2023 11:34:51 ago (+2/-0)

I've had exactly the same problem, and never found any real solution. It destroys my quality of sleep because it wakes me up constantly. Inevitably leads to alcohol which I find is actually far worse for me... Long story short, smoking a lot less and only in the evening is a bit of a "meeting in the middle" solution, although imperfect and not properly solving either problem.

[ - ] MaryXmas 2 points 10 monthsJun 25, 2023 10:32:22 ago (+2/-0)

Find professional help for the trama.

You might try meditation -- get a system with an app that will show you how to meditate. I have muse and recommend it. You need to actually spend the time. The first 20 minutes is garbage regrets from high school, or the asshole that didnt tip at the bar, then you get down to business. Spend at least an hour a day until you get the hang of things. Meditation can have serious and profound effects.

You might also benefit from cold therapy (ice plunges) or breathe-hold/alkaline breathwork. Look up a YouTube video that is like 30 min long and follow it.

Grounding might help but it has limited affects for me.

Ps- I am as based as you are, so don't think that all the physical health stuff is only for the woke.

[ - ] gaperglory 2 points 10 monthsJun 25, 2023 11:11:22 ago (+2/-0)

Cold plunges helped my cousin a lot... Its not bullshit. And meditation is the most underrated therapy in the western world.

[ - ] Inward 2 points 10 monthsJun 25, 2023 10:28:23 ago (+2/-0)

Don't know what the dreams are about, but try to work through them. Forgive yourself for anything you might feel guilt or bad about. You might even be mad for putting yourself in a bad spot.

Prepare yourself each night before you got to bed. Imagine yourself overcoming whatever horror you expect to see. Imagine yourself victorious and then at peace.

Try to understand it, accept it, and let it go.

[ - ] gaperglory 1 point 10 monthsJun 25, 2023 11:12:39 ago (+1/-0)

With dreams, understanding brings control. If you are fixated on that period, there is a reason. Be honest with yourself and you can learn to live with what you've done.

[ - ] JewNitedStates 2 points 10 monthsJun 25, 2023 09:37:27 ago (+4/-2)*

Yeah, marijuana does a great job at suppressing REM sleep. When you stop, your mind tries to catch up by increasing the intensity of your dreams. So right now is likely the worst they're going to get.

You could always use small amounts of edibles. It's going to be a hit or a miss. Surely, there's gotta be a microdose that's large enough to stop REM sleep, but not large enough to cause too many psychoactive effects, if any at all.
You could get a digital scale, cut some edibles into small pieces, and try using 2.5mg or so an hour before bed. Increasing the dosage gradually for the next few nights until you've found the amount that works for you.

Try to avoid the ones that also contain CBD. CBD will reduce the psychoactive effects, but it causes you to dream more.

If you live in an illegal state and can't get access to edibles, delta 8 is a great option.

You could always just wait it out, though. You're going to dream more than usual right now. It won't get any worse than this.

[ - ] BushChuck 2 points 10 monthsJun 25, 2023 10:36:39 ago (+2/-0)

Smoking is bad for you. Do edibles, 200mg will fix you.

[ - ] gaperglory 4 points 10 monthsJun 25, 2023 10:57:54 ago (+4/-0)*

MJ is a personal choice. Its not black and white. Its good for some, and great for some. That being said, ozark is not wrong. Edibles are IMO the way to go if you legitimately need thc. Not as fun and ritualistic as smoking, also not as communal. But edibles are the shit...
Btw ozark. Your tolerance is high as shit. 200 mg would give me a panic attack 2.0

There are grounding and breathing techniques that you can implement in your life. I find that reminding myself where I am actually at in physical reality helps instead of the hellscape in my mind. EMDR therapy is supposed to help you but my therapist told me they couldn't help me and I never followed up with it.

There's resources and spiritual ways of life, it's just hard to actually do them.

[ - ] s23erdctfvyg 1 point 10 monthsJun 25, 2023 13:44:45 ago (+1/-0)

In reality you are physically limited, but what can be done is infinite.
In the dream you are physically unlimited, but what you can do is limited due to the limits of the mind.
This is how you tell reality from dreams. Once you catch on to this on a subconscious level, nightmares won't bother you, as you know they aren't real.

Follow the advice of others along with this, and you should be able to recover.

[ - ] PostWallHelena 1 point 10 monthsJun 25, 2023 11:56:21 ago (+1/-0)*

Im not a fan of using them long term but SSRIs seem to supress dreaming in some people. They did for me. Maybe a very low dose might be effective for what you want.

You might also try eliminating or cutting back on the caffeine. I quit and my sleep patterns really changed for the better. Maybe booze too. I know that its hard to quit multiple drugs at one time but it might really be worth it.

Dont take melatonin. That tends to make it worse. Examine other drugs and supplements you might be taking that could be exacerbating things.

Some strenuous excercise a few hours before bed might help you get more restful sleep. Eating a snack before bed might help too. If you are already eating a snack before bed try not eating a snack before bed! High or low blood sugar could cause nightmares.

A quick internet search seems to indicate that Vitiamin B1 and maybe B12 might reduce nightmares. Magnesium supplementation seems to increase them but a magnesium deficiency might as well. Magnesium might upregulate melatonin, increasing the vividness of dreams. Also different forms of magnesium might be more sedating or activating. But if you are currently taking Mg I would stop it and see what happens. Try the B1 or maybe a B complex?

Ultimately, I think your brain will reset from the pot smoking, but it might take several months. I think you count on the problem resolving itself over time but doing everything you can to have a really zen sleeping experience like not watching violent movies or playing violent video games and going to bed on time, going on a health kick, etc. There may be some other supplements out there that will help. I havent researched this area much.

Good job btw quitting pot! Fuck that shit! Ive quit lots of shit. Youre body really needs a little time to reset but you can do it.

Edit: Here’s some best practices list which didnt really impress me but it lists some drugs used and other interventions for nightmares with PTSD. They mention fluvoxamine(SSRI) https://jcsm.aasm.org/doi/full/10.5664/jcsm.27883

Edit 2– list of drugs to avoid and drugs for treatment of https://www.uspharmacist.com/article/management-of-nightmare-disorder-in-adults

Edit 3– Heres a device thats basically a smartwatch called Nightware that is supposed to snap you out of your nightmare. Who knows if it works? But if it does it would be better than drugs. Its prescription so you could ask the VA about it. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HSAPuclAQNA

Edit 4 why stop now? Thought you’d like to read what the other vets are saying about Prazosin, which seems to be the go-to drug for nightmare disorder with ptsd. Its an alpha blocker bood pressure med. The biggest drug issue is low BP / dizziness which seems to improve over time. Most said it helped. https://old.reddit.com/r/ptsd/comments/2gagwd/has_anyone_tried_prazosin/

You could also think about getting screened for sleep apnea or another sleeping disorder? VA might cover a sleep study?

Try taking magnesium before bed. It doesn’t work for everyone but I call them dream tamers. I still have dreams but they feel milder. Good luck I hope it helps a little.

(Heads up magnesium has a tendency to affect your bowel movements, they might be a bit looser in the morning…)

[ - ] SilentByAssociation 1 point 10 monthsJun 25, 2023 12:43:42 ago (+1/-0)

For those who are interested, chelated magnesium is easier on the bowels.

[ - ] PostWallHelena 2 points 10 monthsJun 25, 2023 13:35:42 ago (+2/-0)

Right there are like 10 different forms of Mg and several are just laxatives that sont get absorbed at all.

[ - ] PostWallHelena 1 point 10 monthsJun 25, 2023 13:43:40 ago (+1/-0)

My research indicates that Mg might increase vivid dreaming. Forms like Mg glycinate seem to be sedating but might hav a paradoxical effect with respect to dreams and nightmares, although it seems like a deficiency of magnesium might also cause nightmares. If you are doing citrate you could switch to glycinate and that “loose” problem might go away. But some people find it helps!

My doctor said they are treating PTSD with magic mushrooms. You may want to look into that.

I don't know what all that shit is. I just grew cubensis the species. I don't recall what strains, but it worked.

The main thing is to be careful growing them and processing them. Lest any dangerous species grow on your drugs. The rest is just dosing. But all the shit about being careful that you tell people about that they don't do, and mushrooms are pretty hard to OD on anyways so fuck it.

Even if you smoke, wear a nicotine patch 24/7. I wear them at night mostly and have lucid dreams and although they're progressively more violent and fukt up, I am aware and that helps my psyche a bunch having that ability.

Marijuana withdrawal can last for months in previously heavy smokers. Insomnia and sleep disturbances are the most common symptoms.

There are many non-narcotic options that can help you get a more tranquil sleep; trazodone, gabapentin, various antihistamines, etc. You should see a doctor and explain the situation. They will also be able to connect you with other resources that might help you cope with your dilemma.

Other than that, you'll have to ride it out. Dreams can be very intense, but remember, they are just dreams. Try different things to try to keep your mind off of the physical symptoms that accompany the dreams. I play chess when I feel anxious. I don't know why, but it always helps me without fail. Maybe you'll be able to find an activity with a similar effect.

CBD before bed solved it for me

Go back to weed for now. Wean yourself off gently. The weed has suppressed the REM. The shit you have to process will need to be tackled one bite at a time.

Achilles in Vietnam by Jonathan Shay. Read it yesterday so you have a map for what you're up against and how to deal with it.

Psychedelics have a growing body of studies indicating that they can be powerful tools for knocking PTSD on its ass in a dose or two. Take it seriously, aim at a non-recreational experience, with proper set and setting, but by all means, let it be as fun as it is wont to be.

You have demons. You came by them honestly, and this citizen knows better than most what you're up against and I thank you for your service. You can slay your demons, or at least lay them to rest, and you deserve help, both chemical and social.

It will still take some doing. God speed your endeavor.

naw. hardcore sleep cycle. It sucks but it works better. Trust a former addict

[ - ] parrygrin 1 point 10 monthsJun 25, 2023 16:48:22 ago (+1/-0)

I looked, but I don't see you discussing what this is. How exactly does one "hardcore sleep cycle"?

[ - ] KyleIsThisTall 0 points 10 monthsJun 29, 2023 16:17:55 ago (+0/-0)

Exercise when done with work, some calisthenics, like 30 minutes of riding a bike in a hilly area. Quick shower, just a rinse. Take a 20 minute nap, no more. Use an alarm. Get up and walk around to shake off any lingering drowsiness. 30 minutes before bed do bodyweight exercises. Wear a blindfold to sleep and have some soothing noise on. I have a fan and listen to those true crime detective shows with the very soothing narrators, but to each their own. Use an alarm and do not get up until it goes off. I even use a bottle to piss in at night so I don't have to get up. Oh, I do keep water by the bed as well so I have no reason to get up unless I am sick. For a 3 day holiday don't shy away from staying up until dawn and sleeping less than 6 hours to make you extremely tired then go to bed early the next night, but always wake up on time.
