It's probably worse than that. He probably tried to do the most unsafe diving possible to spite everyone else and get off on risking dumb idiots lives for the thrill of it.

There is no other explanation of how he could get every aspect of underwater exploration so platonically wrong. It's almost like he was spending more money in parts just to up the risks with the controls especially.
