There are better methods. My favorite is the brazen bull. Slow cooked entertainment combined with panicked claustrophobia and a feast!

Another option would be spiking. I've heard that some of Vlad's men got good enough to ram a spike up a sand-nigger's ass in such a way that the monkey would live for up to a week. If you don't have such skilled individuals, a small cage that doesn't allow for standing in works well enough if left out in the open and high up enough that nobody can sneak them some food, or a knife to end it too soon.

Speaking of claustrophobia, you can stick them in a camera-bedecked coffin and bury it, or in a big metal/clear pipe. This offers choices such as "is it big enough to let them move their hands?" or "is it juuust small enough that they can't fully straighten in any direction?" or even "is is small enough that there's no room to move, and all they can do is scream?"

And another option is a pit, with just enough water in it that they can't sit down, but it has a grate that's just short enough to prevent comfortable standing. You get to throw whatever you want down the grate as well, piss, shit, caltrops, piranha, snakes, insults, hot coals, whatever!

Of course there's always the stocks, nice and simple. But this requires a community hard enough to deal the punishments themselves.
