Is a shortened term for the phrase "God speed your endeavor"

I just thought many may not know that since I never see the whole phrase.

Apparently speed (in this case) is from the middle english speden, to assist, help, and previously from old enlgish spedan to have success ( which seems to have a different etymology from the speed meaning to hasten).

Also KJV uses God speed. But the original greek scripture was more like he that “says to him ‘rejoice’ “ and it uses the word chairein, which could have been a greek interpretation of shalom.

Going by the etymology Helena posted, the original meaning was likely something like "God aid your endeavor" or "God bless your endeavor" in the sense of granting it success. It's just that the meaning of the word "speed" changed over time, but the expression remained unchanged.
