Women are always, instintively, looking for "the better deal." Whether its shopping for shoes, or selecting a baby daddy, they have been genetically conditioned for it by millenia of darwininian selection. And they will rationalize and justify their choices and decisions in as many convoluted permutations as necessary to achieve their desired outcome. And if that outcome is bad? Dis-civic and dis-civilizational? It will never, ever, be their fault.

This is why, for centuries there were arranged marriages, where de-facto ownership and responsibility for control was formally passed from the father to the husband. The tradition of, "giving the bride away" at her wedding? That was Dad formally telling his new son-in-law, "She's your fucking problem now."

This is why adulterous women were stoned to death. Not by the men. They always leave that part out. They were stoned by the other women. Because they were a threat. Because left to their own devices they would tear families, and by extension, the whole society, apart.

This is why domestic discipline within the marriage was considered a feature, not a bug. And witches were burned.
