That is to say where one directs one's energies, work, and dedication. Guys like Lenin and Trotsky occasionally held jobs but their careers were not those jobs. They were full time revolutionaries. In practice they lived very frugally and sometimes lived off donations or illegal activities. Stalin robbed banks.

Applied to current year Amerikwa we take from the Bolsheviks the living frugally. Some people are essentially self-sufficient. Not completely independent from the system as a Vonuan would like to be but independent enough. The options are going to differ depending on one's individual circumstances but one can live off the government, dumpster dive, or live off savings or whatever. Some homeless people are effectively self-sufficient. Some of the most free people have been hobos, hippies, some Indians, etc. Not in thrall to the machine.
