Just a point of interest re the missing nitrate. Much of my business involved train derailments and several times in that duration I was rerailing container cars loaded with pink potash/potassium nitrate, many times the bottom hatches weren't closed tight enough and the potash would spill out slowly through the course of the haul and after a 1,000 miles some cars were emptied out...I've seen trails of pink along the rail tracks for miles, it was lost cargo but not stolen....I've seen it...it is possible that government would orchestrate the theft of such a product but I have seen otherwise.
Don't worry, nothing will happen and if something does happen it'll be just major enough to take away a few rights or add increased surveillance without riling anyone up too much

That is incorrect. It can be used as an oxidizer but it can also be used as a self decomposing molecule. It behaves more like a high explosive in the self decomposing type of reaction. Tannerite is just ammonium nitrate plus a sensitizer. A sensitizer makes a high explosive that is hard to set off easier to set off, referred to as a binary explosive. In the case of Tannerite I believe the sensitizer is just aluminum powder.
The Lebanon case involved a dirty, likely mismanaged warehouse where all kinds of dusty shit could have gotten on the AN. Then you just need something percussive to set it off.
The bronze-brown color of the Lebanon explosion suggests to me it was ammonium nitrate because that's the same color of gas that's given off whenever I've reacted sulfuric acid and nitrate compounds to make nitric acid (entirely for educational and research purposes only, of coursh.)
If I remember correctly, ANFO gives off a smoke that's slightly more orange-to-yellowish, but I'm going off secondhand reports.
