It is a heresy, and those who believe it are in danger of being damned.

We want to follow up on this theme regarding Protestantism, which seems to have really struck a nerve. A couple of necessary distinctions first, because the Catholic mind makes distinctions because distinctions must be made to arrive at correct understanding so right judgments can be formed — and then, of course, choices.

First, Protestantism is a heresy, and no amount of politically correct pandering will ever alter that. It is a heresy, plain and simple. And because it is a heresy, it is a lie.

The Church, in canon 751 of the Code of Canon Law, defines heresy as "the obstinate denial or obstinate doubt after the reception of baptism of some truth which is to be believed by divine and catholic faith." But as the Catechism points out, there are formal heretics and material heretics, and the difference between the two boils down to the individual's subjective disposition of his opinion.

A formal heretic is one who is aware that his belief is at odds with Catholic teaching and yet freely and willingly continues to cling to the belief pertinaciously, meaning stubbornly. In other words, they have a bad motive and cling to a position purely out of pride, a position they know or suspect is wrong but are simply unwilling to admit it. This is a man of bad will.

But a material heretic is a person who denies a truth that must be held by divine and Catholic faith, but who holds the heretical belief because of either invincible ignorance or because of an error held in good faith. "Good faith" here means he thinks he is right and not in error, but on the contrary, is in possession of the truth.

This is precisely why Catholicism is not Christian.

Stop posting your Catholic syncretism in the Christian subs if you think that way.

You've got your Catholic sub to yourself.

...And an strict Orthodox Christian calls the Catholics heretics because of idolatry. To call all Protestants heretics by definition because 'Anything not aligning with Catholic doctrine is heretical' is not particularly helpful to those who have lost their way. It is a circular definition that assumes Catholicism is the one true religion and this will not help bring anyone back to the flock. You cannot expect the non-faithful to be swayed by arguments that require faith in the first place. You must explain WHY Protestant beliefs are heretical and make clear arguments based on scripture, faith, and salvation.

Just saying "anyone not following Catholic doctrine is going to hell" will drive people away.

@carnold03 your complete lack of engagement in any of these posts you make in v/Catholicism demonstrates that you are not really interested in actually spreading the gospel. Proselytizing takes more than just copy-and-pasting. This is not how outreach works and this is not how you save souls.

If you care enough to post this, you should care enough to engage in the thread. Right now this looks more like Bot activity intended to make Catholics look inflexible and blind adherents to doctrine and dogma.

Church canon is not biblical. God speaks to us through the bible, not through catholic canon. I am a heretic to the catholic empire. I am a faithful believer in Jesus Christ. I don't need the catholic structure or priests, pokes, communion, works, confession or Mary to be saved. Jesus' blood on the cross is enough. I feel sorry that catholics are unable to accept that Jesus and his sacrifice are enough and they can't add anything more to improve or expand that grace. All salvation is through Jesus. No salvation is provided through adherence to catholic ritual and "Law."
