I accidentally wipe the wrong hard drive with all my work on it

submitted by anon to Confessions 10 monthsJun 10, 2023 13:16:55 ago (+19/-1)     (Confessions)

I had an ssd fail and I wiped another (wrong) ssd in the process. I get the stupid award for today. My punishment is wasting hours today looking at progress bars restoring what I can. Luckily I think I lost about a day worth of important work and some other unimportant files. Let this serve as a reminder to back up your files, especially the stuff you care about.

You can probably recover it

normal format only deletes/overwrites a tiny bit of filesystem metadata, but does not overwrite all of the data itself. The data is still there. This is especially true on SSDs, due to wear levelling and other features of SSDs.

Can confirm this works.

I probably could. But then I have to become an expert in file recovery. I will just redo the work I lost.

Recover up to 2GB data for free on Windows 11/10/8/7

That's the type of shit I was trying to avoid. Is there no free and open source alternative?

Just pirate the software. I’ve used cracked recovery programs a few times. They worked fine.

Thanks. I don't need it but good to know for the future.

lol

Why would I write a very useful programme and then give it to you for free?

2Gb for free is generous. I'd give you a couple hundred megs, just to prove it works.

Why would I write a very useful programme and then give it to you for free?

People do it for recognition and donations.

Sounds horrible.

Notice how real businesses do not act in such a retarded fashion?

Free and open source trumps anything a business can shit out.

lol.

One example.

edit - this chucklefuck could have written "Linux" and had a valid point. But no, just another chucklefucking retard.

This site is damn near worthless.

Where have all the goats gone?

edit - lol, 24 hours and no response. Coward faggot.

Most of the files will still have the nomenclature you gave them but might have extra characters associated with it.

It is time consuming but worth it if you really need to recover the files.

Whoops!!! Yeah, I had a raid5 with all my media on it and I fucked up replacing a drive. Goodbye 5tb of movies, tv and music. Oh well. Most of it was shit in retrospect.

Jesus and Satan have a discussion as to who is the better programmer. This goes on for a few hours until they come to an agreement to hold a contest, with God as the judge.

They sit themselves at their computers and begin. They type furiously, lines of code streaming up the screen, for several hours straight. Seconds before the end of the competition, a bolt of lightning strikes, taking out the electricity. Moments later, the power is restored, and God announces that the contest is over.

He asks Satan to show what he has come up with. Satan is visibly upset, and cries, "I have nothing. I lost it all when the power went out."

"Very well, then," says God, "let us see if Jesus fared any better."

Jesus enters a command, and the screen comes to life in vivid display, the voices of an angelic choir pour forth from the speakers. Satan is astonished.

He stutters, "B-b-but how? I lost everything, yet Jesus' program is intact. How did he do it?"

God smiled all-knowingly, "Jesus saves."

-- Sorry.

why would you bother wiping ssds? also if you're wiping machines, never have live or valuable disks hooked up.

I've used these two programs more than once on mine and other people's drives.

testdisk is awesome! Just download https://www.system-rescue.org/Download/ and run testdisk. It'll recover all your files.

I deleted my checkout the other day. Luckily all my buffers were still stuck in the editor in RAM.

Even if you get some cheap storage. Like pCloud. Dump there factory tool and take the time to configure rclone. It works on almost all platforms and is tight as fuck.
